Is it not sore to give bone marrow!?
Sign onto the bone marrow register!!
if you are in the Edinburgh area you can do it next week!!! I’ve been on the register in Aus for 13 years now and I’ve become aware of the register in the UK though the sad turn of events that one of the ladies I work with has a young son who is need of a bone marrow transplant – sadly he has not been fortunate enough to get a match through his family and is now looking for a non related donor...
The Anthony Nolan Trust is running several clinics in the Edinburgh area for people to register – registration involves a bunch of paper work and a blood sample being taken
Sunday 14 September, 11am – 3pm Aubigny Sports Centre, Haddington
Tuesday 16 September, 4pm – 8pm Loch Centre, Well Wynd, Tranent.
Tuesday 21 October, 5pm – 8.30pm Fire Brigade College, Gullane.
For full details see the Trust’s website The Anthony Nolan Trust | Reg. No. 803716 / SC038827 | Home
The website will also tell you where there are registration clinics coming up around the UK - have attached a jpg of the Edinburgh clinic poster
Is it not sore to give bone marrow!?
to register is just a blood donation.
From the bit of reading I have done here are 2 methods of harvesting - one involving a general anaesthetic and marrow being taken directly from the bone – the other one involves injections and harvesting from the blood...
From what I can recall from the explanation given to me 13 years ago the first method – which then was the only method can cause some discomfort – it’s surgical procedure .....
The website goes into greater detail
If you give blood regularly as well, they will also ask you if you would like to go onto the National Blood Service's Bone Marrow Donor register as well.
And until you have to opt out of organ donation in this country (if that ever happens)
Welcome to UK Transplant
I would love to... but I can't - there are some medications (Epilepsy ones being among them) that prevent you from being on the Blood Transfusion service (and presumably the Bone Marrow one too )
If you are on any medication check with the services if you can donate - there are some illnesses (like colds and more seriously jaundice) that prevent you giving as well.

My mother donated bone marrow when her brother had leukaemia. She said it was a bit sore but nothing terrible, she was back at work within a week. She also donated stem cells which are harvested by filtering out the cells, this was not painful just a bit of a strange sensation. This was about 10 years ago and never suffered any ill effects from this
