Just thought i would say hello

    Hi all

My first post and being done under the guidance of Trouble. Thought i would introduce myself as im completely new to the forum and MJ. Only had two lessons so far and am looking forward to getting stuck into it. Went to utopia last night, had a great time but found it frustrating not being able to dance like the rest of you. Thanks ladies for giving me the dances i did get.

Finally, any tips for a newcomer like me would be welcome. Hoping to get dancing lessons in 3 times a week so look forward to showing you my moves when i see you all next.

Dancing tips - get in as many lessons as possible and don't be afraid to ask ladies to dance during freestyle. It's the best way to get better and practice your moves.

Forum tips - It's absolutely crucial that you spell Frazqyxc's name right. He gets the right hump if you don't.

Welcome. Doing it 3 times a week is strongly recommended - it will definitely accelerate things for you.

Oh - and Trouble provided me with great advice which I took on board - and which helped me a lot.

    Good luck!

Modern Jive and this forum are addictive.

There's no help for us. But it's not too late to save yourself. My advice is to join the Moonies as they will exert less control over your life

If you persist in this hobby you will find that 3 nights a week isn't enough. Eventually you will find that 7 nights a week still leaves you hungry for more. You'll start going to weekenders where you can dance 24 hours a day and use coffee and slaps with wet fish to stay awake.

You'll also find that it affects your sex life. You meed thousands of lovely women and will have far more opportunites to have sex, but you'll find that you'd rather be dancing with them

My advice is to walk away now while you still can. Don't look back, we're not waving, we're doing semi-circles*

    *well, some of you are

Scarface nice to meet you last night... nice earring!

If you go regularly and write down the moves each night and then re do all the move s that you get on well with , each night you will remember loads...

    happy dancing

Welcome to the forum Scarface, love the name and the avitar, very sultry and sexy.

Trouble is a fabulous dancer and you will be in good hands.

My advice, dance as much as you can, don't take yourself too seriously, have fun and smile, be smooth and have attitude, for me its not a question of knowing loads of flashy moves but dancing with someone who dances smoothly and gives me a big smile means lots. Looking forward to dancing with you really soon.
if you love the life you live then you'll get a lot more done

Write stuff down, but don't get too hung up on the moves. Moves are a good crutch at the start, but don't try to remember sequences of moves.

Practice a lot. Try leading with one finger, or ideally no body contact at all.

Don't pay too much attention to this forum.

    Wear sunscreen.

After a while you'll find that you can lead from across the floor, then a different room, then a different town, eventually leading thousands of women across the world.

David said "Don't pay too much attention to this forum". This particularly applies to any dance related advice that he gives on here (the only thing he's ever been right about is the sun screen - even then he's still using factor 4).

The best advice I can give you is to listen to and watch your teacher during the lesson. Do what you teacher says and copy what they do. I'm constanly amazed by the failure of people to do this in the lesson. People copy the guy next to them, talk while the teacher is talking, don't watch the demonstration, etc. Just give your teacher your full attention. As for writing it down, only do this if you have empty pages in the train-o-spotting notebook you keep in your anorak pocket. You just need to practice what you've been taught and expect to remember no more than one move from any lesson. Get good at that move and then add another. Do not be in a hurry to increase the number of moves you do: aim to get good at what you do.

Remember that you are a beginner.

Concentrate on developing good floorcraft, scarface. It will help you to stay out of trouble. On the dancefloor that is.

What if the teacher is rubbish? I know the obvious answer is to find a class where the teacher isn't rubbish but how's a beginner to know that? On my first few nights at Ceroc everyone freestyling looked like an incredible dancer.

I think the answer to this one is to attend more than one night and get lessons from more than one teacher. After a few weeks you'll find out who the good teachers are. Once you've found a teacher you like I would ask them which other teachers or nights they recommend so that you can have some consistency.

Having said that, Modern Jive is a social dance. Some nights are popular because they are sociable, not because the teacher is any good.

As a teacher I find it frustrating that Modern Jive teaching is so variable. We can't even agree that there is correct footwork with many teachers saying that there is no footwork at all!

    Welcome Scarface,

3 nights of dancing will be very good for your dance technique but be prepared for the overdraft when the addiction kicks in

A smile and eye contact (not looking down my front, or over my head ) will win you more dance partners than any number of flashy moves.

As I have said somewhere else on here, I will happily dance one or two moves for an entire track with a partner who has both a smile and eye contact If you learn to dance with musicality then extra kudos for you, you will be danced with all the more.

Welcome to the madness - There is no escape now.

    Cheers Whitetiger

Have met and danced with you a couple of times and look forward to dancing with you again.

Only problem I have noticed with being on the forum is sometimes work gets in the way (like today)

Just remember it is all supposed to be fun

    Hello!
Looking forward to meeting soon....going to try and make the next freestyle. Trouble says I have to teach you to "dance sexy"...but I think she is fairly capable of doing that herself....

I never did get a good name sorted and now hate to think of the suggestions if I asked.

PS. Anything trouble says about me is simply not true.....!
