I'm sure you know that SALT is now very EVIL, and where do you now find those warm crusty white loaves to pick at on the way home from the corner bakery ???

Either that, or they're liers, the lot of them ;-)
Really interesting response which I will bear in mind when I am eating my well seasoned cold lamb which I bought in Morrisons on my white crusty bread, also bought at Morrisons.

You must live in Morrison heaven. I've given up on steamed white and generally choose granary (Morrisons own) on the few occasions when I do buy bread - even then I throw more to the birds than I consume. It's just too soft and squidgy and lacking in substance.

No doubt it keeps better but .....

Ah, yes:smalahove. But not just for Christmas, though? Although Wikipedia claims it's a Christmas dish in Norway, I've always thought of it as more of an all-year (or possibly autumn and winter) dish.

In fact smalahove is very tasty - you just have to try not to look at what's actually lying on your plate grinning at you....

But why aren't they made here? It's not like we're short of sheep.
Very strange, isn't it? You should think lamb and mutton was cheaper over here than it is, too, with the amont of sheep you've got in this country. Btw, is it just me, or is it impossible to get mutton in the supermarkets? Oh no, Rubyred said the same thing. But why is this?

I'm guessing that perhaps it dates back to times when long term winter storage of meats was more important in Norway, to see through the harsher winters?

Yes, of course it does, but that would be the same for every country, surely, so why doesn't it excist over here?

I was thinking that maybe because winters were/are harsher over there, that more ways and types of meat were needed for preservation?

Winters used to be pretty harshe over here, too.... Also, having severely cold winters, we could actually freeze a lot of meat, and then enjoy it fresh! So I think drying, salting and curing meat was just as important in less cold climates, as the meat would go off quicker.

Re: I want to talk about LAMB.

Aye aye sport fans I is back.

Bloody Lamb I have revised my estimate of it, it may not be SAS material, but on the biological warfare it can not be surpassed.

I kinda left it for a few days and then opened the stew pot to find an eco system developing in there.

So I did the only sensible thing and scrapped off most of the mould and heated up the whole thing and ate it.

Damn near killed me I must say. however I have learnt a valuable lesson.....Stick with pork. you know where you are with pork. Still it did my weight loss the power of good.

    All hail the pork.

Maybe it's time to at least slightly rethink the cook it - leave it in the pot - forget about it - eat it several days later mode of operation. Unless that is you really want to lose weight the quick way.

Well this system has worked for years with me.

It is just the lamb, sneaky bloody things lamb..All alluring and lovely but with a bite that you will remember for at least 7 toilet rolls.

Bit like women Lamb...looks all lovely but bites you in the ar*e when given the chance.

Off Lamb and women now, just me and my old faithfull right hand.

Dave, you are meant to throw the mold away, not heat it up and eat it
