Re: Strictly Come Dancing (SCD) 2008

Gary Rhodes needs to learn to smile - he does a weird sort-of grimace that makes me think he's either really angry or in pain (both may be true but they don't really convey the right image on the dance floor).

Wiggling seems to be a big issue for a lot of the contestants this year - maybe ZW and i should go and give them a hand ?

Austin Healy did a fantastic job on his Waltz IMO. Erin could be onto a winner there, let's just hope his latin doesn't let him down.

I'm looking forward to seeing the girls this week, let's see what they can do!

Saturday early evenings, and Sunday early evenings, on BBC1

The next one is Saturday 27 Sep, 6:45pm, then Sunday 28th Sep, 8pm.

The earlier shows are on iPlayer:

Huh, the girlies are doing salsa and foxtrot, that's a bit weird - I thought the usual format was to work through the Latin and Ballroom dances before going onto salsa / AT / etc.?

Maybe Chris Marques (or SSSM, as I like to think of him) was only available this week?

Would be funny to see him teaching Jodie.

Blimey, he's got a Wikipedia entry - well, sort of. At least, he does for now...

Someone with a slightly naughty sense of humour may have been there already.

He and his partner are described as "beating off stiff competition" on the way to winning Salsa championships.

Or maybe it's only the way my depraved mind works on occasion ...

I've bought Len's book as a birthday present for my mother. I haven't looked at it, but I got the impression from when he was on Jonathan Ross's radio programme that a large part was about him growing up in London.

I also had a flick through Craig's book in a bookshop the other day but nothing sunk in!

[bitch mode]Am I the only one who thought Jodie Kid looked like a frumpy old granny tonight on ITT [/bitch mode]

On the other hand, Cherie Lungie was looking extremely promising IMO!

    She wasn't good.

Cherie looked gorgeous, in every sense.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on her, at the moment, based on what I saw.

Heather looked, frankly, disappointing in the salsa - she was carried by Brian; his rep as a salsa dancer is clearly well-deserved. She looked awkward.

Brendan and Lisa's salsa looked, well, a bit weird, more like a samba / chacha mix than salsa to me.

Plus, the group merengue looked like, well, I dunno really, something not very much like Merengue....

    ....
Aye, I think Lisa is being overhyped. (Somehow it feels REALLY good to post this ) I think she's too tall and her legs are too long for latin and I don't think she's going to prove to have the core strength to be sharp and neat in her movements. As a rule, little people look more in control of their bits to my eyes, in the Jive in particular.

Re: Strictly Come Dancing (SCD) 2008

Jessie Wallace and Darren Bennett (salsa)
Flat, awkward, no rhythm, some bad mistakes. Generally poor. And it wasn't salsa, which didn't help much.

Christine Bleakley and Matthew Cutler (foxtrot)
Surprisingly good. I thought she'd be rubbish, she was enchanting instead. Sinple, elegant, they looked gorgeous and the routine went quickly and naturally.

Lisa Snowdon and Brendan Cole (salsa)
Bit pants really. To be fair, Lisa looked like a (beginner) salsa dancer, whereas Jessie didn't. Bit too show-y also, not much salsa content - and blimey, why oh why do people do those flippin' samba rolls in a salsa dance?

Jodie Kidd and Ian Waite (foxtrot)
She walked "lumpily", especially during the turns. Generally, yes, I thought it was a bit awkward - 25 seemed quite high to me.

Heather Small and Brian Fortuna (salsa)
Heather was a bit disappointing - she had great music (genuine salsa music), a superb salsa specialist as a partner, but it still didn't really come off for me.

Gillian Taylforth and Anton DuBeke (foxtrot)
Blimey. Well, it wasn't a complete disaster.

Rachel Stevens and Vincent Samone (salsa)
Wooo... Loved the slow start, very bold, and the music was inspired. Some lovely movements, very brave choreography, and overall it looked excellent.

Cherie Lungie and James Jordan (foxtrot)
    I knew she'd be great!

As for the group Merengue (what? Where was the merengue? I didn't see any... ) - God almighty, Gary Rhodes is rubbish, he has to go. Story, end of. It was lovely to see Don shake it out a bit, and even John didn't look totally rubbish, amazingly.
