Well i Wish i had as much free time as you do
There seem to have been many more butterflies around this year compared to normal (at least here in the back garden.....).
My gardener Jim showed me an amazing 'trick' a couple of weeks back: he stood in the garden and held his hand out whilst a butterfly was darting around. Eventually, the butterfly just decided to land in his plam and stay there.
He then repeated the 'trick' another 6 times - so it was no fluke.
I then decided to have a go.......and it just would not do it for me..
Jim told me that the secret is to be patient, be still, make sure your palm is flat, ......and......"look the butterfly" in the eyes.
.
The next day I tried again, and it worked! This is what I found:
Has anyone else done this kind of thing - and what was your experience?
- Be patient - it can take 2-3 mins
- The butterfly will often circle round - and get gradually closer before choosing to land in your palm
- It has only worked for me with the orangey butterflies (sorry - don't know the name) - never the 'cabbage white' ones - they seem a bit 'shy'
- The butterfly will stay there for ages - until you get bored or there is some kind of disturbance
- They don't seem to do anything whilst there - I did think maybe they would be picking up salts from the skin - but I never saw them 'feeding'
- You can go close to a butterfly when it is on a shrub or soemthing and will come to you
- It has never worked outside of my back garden (only tried briefly twice elsewhere)
- It is a nice feeling (for me) to connect to nature in this way. It sounds corny but it is strangely rewarding.
Well i Wish i had as much free time as you do
Sounds like a Red Admiral
Not a chance, I'm frightened of flying things! (except planes, kites and helicopters )Has anyone else done this kind of thing - and what was your experience?
I had to go to a butterfly farm with our class for a school trip. I spent the whole time in the shop looking through the window whilst the kids waved at me.
Hmm from the title of the thread - I assumed you had found a hippy 60's book on the sexual ecstasy brought on by getting stage fright. Weird i thought.
and I assumed he was discussing re-runs of a comedy series starring Wendy Craig and Geoffrey Palmer
Are you two boys lost?
There is a nice geeky thread upstairs you know.

I went to a butterfly enclosure a year ago in Queensland and the butterflies would land on some people and not others. The staff said that perfumes and suncreams put the bugs off. Plus some types will be more likely to be lazy and want to land more frequently than others.
Hold on call a copper Ive been done over.
Cruella has got an icon!
And shes a BIRD!!!! A BIRD !!!
This is outrageous.
A BIRD.
Unbelievable!
I blame Maggy Thatcher, what is the world coming too??
I am speechless.

Aha!!!! I say again AHA!!!.
The icons seems to have disappeared from the master himself.
Even Cruella has lost hers.
Damn I feel better now.
I suppose it is iconic. Play on words there sport fans. DJ would be proud of my eloquence. Been reading me cornflake packets again.
