Which Northern Cities Should be Left to Rot?

Prompted by this report from "Call me Dave" Cameron's favourite think-tank, which English northern cities do you think should be abandoned?

I have made it a multi-option poll and suspect some people may wish other options included

Re: Which Northern Cities Should be Left to Rot?

Since when is London a northern English city?
This is the most ridiculous idea i have heard for a while, and just likely to increase disparities in wealth. The people who can afford to move south would and the poorer ones left behind. There is a lot of potential to redevelope run down areas, and there is an interesting atttempt at this in castlefield at the mo, kevin mcloud is doing a program on it. And finally, more than anything else, i would never want to live in london anyway! Until i can move back home to scotland i will happily stay in north england.

Of course, it isn't. I included London as the author of the report is from that delightful metropolis, and his city is as ripe for such treatment as any other city IMO.

Apologies. I'd forgotten Middlesbrough was somewhat unique in this spelling.

Can some mod do the needful?

We Scots are being discriminated against once more!! We are more northern than any of those cities on the poll AND its our forum! So we want to be left to rot and move to London too![Just in case irony is not understood in the south either]

In the paper yesterday it mentioned a TV series where they film uplifting urban regeneration in towns which have fallen on hard times.

The episode was about the opening of a ascetically pleasing bridge over a river in Castleton, West Yorkshire.

But this will always be true. It does sometimes make sense to relocate. For example remote cities can be relatively costly to live in will limited opportunity, (and hence need subsidy). An extreme example might be the Russian Artic cities.

    Consider Modern Jive nights.

One easy rule of thumb might be any major city that isn't within reasonable travelling distance of X dance nights a week should be abandoned. Less people would need to travel, and more would have the opportunity to dance on the night(s) they have free.

Was thinking Dundee might be the best Scottish candidate.

Aberdeen is perhaps an oil city. Inverness is the capital of the highlands, and a suitable size. Edinburgh is the Scottish capital and Glasgow is big enough to sustain itself.

Not sure what Dundee has got going for it.

You can regenerate them but that won't move them geographically.

Because of their proximity to relatively thriving cities Liverpool and Bradford are probably bad candidates.

Barrow, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and even Newcastle are probably good candidates because of their relative geographical isolation.

A wall works from both sides. Are you sure that Hadrian's objective wasn't to keep us Scots on the other side?

The South is rubbish, you should all stay in the North. You really wouldn't like it down here anyway. We're all shandy-drinking puuftahs and we all support the wrong teams etc.

Let those Softie Southerner's think that it's grim Oop North. Then we can all stay up here in peace.

Liverpool has had a lot of money spent on it. The Albert dock has had a make over and is touristy. Liverpool thinks it is a destination city.

Barrow, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and even Newcastle are probably good candidates because of their relative geographical isolation.
Middlesborough was the film set for Logan's Run?

I know people from Hull who say it's the pits.
It didn't used to be, it was the Land of Green Ginger, when I visisted as a child.
But Prescott would never let it happen.

The other 3 I've never visited.

It does have classic sci-fi connections. Ridley Scott was born in North Shields. The opening cityscape shots of Blade Runner were inspired by his childhood memories of the industrial Teeside skyline at night.
