How can someone with Northern Irish connections (IIRC?) set up a poll including
    • White - British
    • White - Irish
as separate options and keep a straight face?

And how about a White - Scottish option for all us woad-wearing Braveheart obsessed Jocks, Mr B? If Irish is an ethnicity, so is Scottish. Come to think, how about a White - Ulster Scot option too?
I guess people could vote based on whether they use a British or Irish passport...

    Irish/British isn't comparable to Scottish/British though - Northern Irish/British would be. I'm Northern Irish so I can't vote.

    Oh well, I'll survive.

Huh, I wonder why there are different censuses in Scotland and NI? One would think that this sort of information should be as homogenous and consistent as possible, Europe-wide ideally.

Ooh, maybe there should be a ".eng" / ".wal" URL

So... We are on A Scottish forum but we are using English templates? AM jot even going to attempt to answer the Irish question.

In the interests of fairness, the poll should have a "I don't want to say" option.

Perhaps, once the creator of said flawed poll has finished inspecting his bowel from close proximity, we can have a more complete and fairer poll?

As some one said, we will all survive: but will we answer?

On the subject of different censii: we are different countries with different legal, education and religious systems. Of course we have different censii.

Lastly, U'll be delighted to read, Chinese ethnicity (politically speaking) is still part of being black: the full title being something like Black Ethnic Minority.

I stand with the mighty DB on this one, if you don't want to say then you can't sensibly have a poll option for it, because then you DO want to say that you don't want to say Just don't say

Why? I'm not interested in people who don't want to say what ethnicity they are. If you don't want to say, don't vote. Seems fairly simple to me.

But, OK, to stop you whingeing Scots, I'll add a "White - Scottish" option.

Censii? Is that an actual word?

I'm just interested in this stuff. We've got an age poll, which is interesting (to me), so I thought an ethnicity poll might be informative.

I don't give a monkey's about what politically-correct label is being applied to specific groups. Unlike, it seems, every other poster on this thread. I really couldn't care less - personally, I'm not defined by my ethnicity.

I'm only interested in the results.

Personally I'd keep my monkeys and haggle. My point was that we need no labels at all, not MORE . Anyway, arguing over labels is fun

So, you don't care about how clearly you're labelling the pigeonholes, but you're interested who flies into which one. What is this, Luke Reinhardt moonlighting for Mori?

You'll be telling us next that the results you were really looking for were actually the comments, and just set the poll up as some sort of clever trawling/trolling maneuvre.

Not quite - more like, I knew the labels would be controversial, hence I picked a standard set and stuck with it. There's no "right" set of options, but at least this is clearly consistent with official demographic data, rather than just making up a set of labels.

My mistake was in not realising that there was no "UK Census"; I added the "Scottish" poll option to correct that.

But I don't care what the actual labels are, no - they'll never be "right" for some people, so it's not worth worrying about. So I don't.

Meh. I'm only interested in why you're interested in the results.

I withdraw the completely unwarranted accusation, but only because I'm scared of moderator reprisal.

By the way, since I was actually born in England, I would like to see a White - English option too

Actually, I want to compare demographics of different dance forms (AT and salsa and MJ).

However, I'm not sure how to get data for AT and salsa, being as the options are UK (or England and Wales) centric... There's no UK-based AT / salsa forums. Hmmm, may need a bit of thinking about.

Ah. DJB wouldn't do that for one very good reason. As he admitted on another thread, a small part of him is Welsh, so he'd have to change the form to allow multiple choice.

I cant see an option for Mexican Chinese ?

Although Id suggest you will find a far wider ethnic range in Salsa in UK v Ceroc/Jive in the uk which is worthy of study

Y'know, if that's your goal, wouldn't it be more interesting to include a Hispanic/Latino category, considering the cultural background of AT & Salsa?

Yes, but how to get the data, that's the tricky bit...
