Sorry to hear about your dad.

I forgot to mention.. yes, dancing certainly is the best stress relief of all.

Take it all out on your dance partner! ha haaaa

Re: How do you cope with stress?

I did the Myers Briggs personality test some time ago. From that we established that when somebody is in a stressed state they fall into a personality type which is their exact opposite.

i.e. If you are an extrovert, under stress you become an introvert etc.

Quite eye opening. Guess what I'm trying to say is, it is very much dependant on personality as to how one copes with stress.
I see people in the gym every single day who do not improve physiologically purely down to the fact that they are under some form of stress, mental or physical. Its effects on the body are massive and yet people are still not fully aware of its potential implications.

I am quite extrovert (at work anyway), and so I tend to become the introvert when stressed. I cope by hammering the life out of myself at the gym. A cliche I know, but it works for me. At the end of the session, the endorphine release is normally so large I normally feel stress free.

I also think of something my missus tells me (quite often!), "it's pointless worrying about something you can't change"

    Simple, but true.

Re: How do you cope with stress?

I know this will sound strange to a few folk...

My relationship with God is the anchor, rock and unchangeable, unshakeable thing in my life. No matter how dark things seem to get - and although I'm usually a pretty 'up' person, I can get really down sometimes - I know that its not just me handling it by myself. And even in the midst of anguish and turmoil there can be an innner peace and calm and assurance that there is purpose and that things will get better.

Aside from that, my personal regular stress coping strategies are music, chocolate, taking time out to do something just for the fun of it, exercise, spending time with friends - basically just trying to have life in some sort of a balance.

Yeah, once you admit you can't handle the stress anymore and appeal to God or the powers that be, you tend to get unexpected help. "Cast your burdens" - that's somewhere in the bible isn't it Lynn?

It's about the hubris of thinking you can control everything yourself.

I tend to head to the sea shore. I grew up near the coast, but i think the sea is really calming and destressing. If you live too far from the sea, then the nearest countryside. As long as you can commune with nature.

It doesn't have to be a holiday - just a few hours time out.

unlike some teenagers i don't turn to the bottle, doesn't help just makes you choke on something with no taste...

i like to take one of my shopaholic books or a girly magazine, a flake or galaxy and run a nice hot bath sometimes il play music and sing a long too which really annoys my neighbour

then il make myself a hot chocolate and watch something funny like family guy or summer heights high

alternatively if iv had a bad day at school (when i used to go to school) i'd stroll into town and buy something sweet to cheer myself up like a hairband or a necklace. nothing to expensive anything from claires or peacocks.

then i'd skip into greggs and tuck into a cookie on the way home.

thats the way i like to de-stress.

I take my dog for a good walk, and then curl up on the sofa with a good book and some chocolate.
Failing that, I call Little Monkey

Re: How do you cope with stress?

Stress relief from: Praying, Dancing, Reading, followed in no particular order by:
Walking, Writing, Cuddles, Listening to Music, Chocolate, Baking, Gym (only just started this so I am still at the rabbit in headlights stage), Remembering Wonderful Dances, Going out with Friends or Family, Non Dance Hobbies, Listening to or Watching the Sea, Cutting the Hedge, Computer Games.

I try to use Sleep and Getting a Massage as preventative rather than curative systems and then there is Looking for new Jobs / Courses for when life at work really makes me tired of life

It all depends on what is stressing me out, where I am and what I can do about it at that point in time.

Re: How do you cope with stress?

It's funny this thread has been on this week, especially the last 24 hours for me. In order as of today, 1.cried my heart out, 2.talked to my friends and family,3. set aside some me time and 4. although too exhausted to dance I may [or may not] go for a walk in the coutryside around me later.
if you love the life you live then you'll get a lot more done
