And of course I have invited lots of female friends as well.

The advantage to this is that there is a lot of overlap with my social circle and the dancers. Its rare that I am out at a non dancing social night out and there aren't several other dancers there - and sometimes, if there is space and music we get up and dance - because the best way to recruit people is let them see how much fun it is!

Sometimes my sons friends are around when I am leaving to go out for a night of dancing and I say come on, you lot should come. I think they would but no one wants to be seen to say yes...working on it though because I think a couple of them would be really good. Have shown them some basic moves and they pick it up really quickly, just too embarrassed, shame

Have also tried to get both my kids involved.....perhaps the thought of being interested in the same thing as their mother is a bit off putting!

I suppose the standard of his dancing is only relevant to me. His manners are, as s38 says, another matter.

If the guy was a fab dancer and had been coming for a long time I'd make more of an effort to keep him and adjust his attitude. As he's a slow learner who has reduced a complete beginner to tears on her first night I am less inclined to make an effort to retain him than I would be if he showed great promise as a dance. To put it another way, if someone showed great promise but had reduced a beginner to tears I'd react differently.

Hmmm, do we want more men like DTS?* - erm, yes please and then some?! Have you danced with him?

As DTS says, people are different in different environments. I think dancing is a 'civilising' influence, not least because it teaches participants that there can be contact without sleaziness - from both sides. In a culture where 'dancing' seems to be a solo activity unless/until a pair get close up with the intention to grind crotches/engage tongues, is learning a respectful but FUN form of physical contact not a good thing?

I am relentlessly evangelistic about dancing to everyone and anyone we meet I have finally persuaded one of my oldest friends to start, after years of pestering and a sly move (getting his wife hooked so that she joined in the campaign - double pester power!). He sent me a text about 5 weeks in saying 'this is fantastic, why didn't I do it before?'

    Re: Recruitment of new dancers.

We seem to have a healthy flow of new dancers locally.

Normally about 50 50 men to women.

    Recently more men than women.

I like to join in the beginner class, but I am hesitant to do so when there are over 5 men more than women. This is because I do not want the beginner men to stand out too often.

In fact, in the beginner follow up class we had 10 men and 2 women!

The intermediate class also had more men than women.

They have a third class running at the same time as the beginner follow up and the intermediate class - called the "towards intermediate" - (or something like that) This had 3 girls over, so I joined that one.

Why more men than women? - not sure, once a month they have an open air dance party, in the middle of a shoping centre/ entertainment area. (so should that mean more girls?)

There is an influx from local Uni's (more than 60% of dancers are under 30)

They have just recently done a TV add which will air soon.

As to DTS inviting his work mates along - why not? Dancing is dancing, a job is a job. The great thing about dance is that is does not matter what job you do, it matters that you have fun, meet a whole range of people [now, if you were an accountant..... ]

Did this again tonight at a BBQ (used my phone for the music) and think I have another one, or possibly two.

I will admit I was introduced to dancing by a female friend who went after seeing a busk and I was there intentionally for emotional support , but soon after there were some nights she didn't go but I kept it up cause I got hooked.

In turn I did go on about it to my mates and eventually one approached me (in private for some reason, and he sounded really timid) and said would you mind if I came along? and he's now hooked, I trying to get more numbers involved though

No. The best recruiters are people who are both enthusiastic and relatively new (i.e. less than a couple of years´experience on average).

Absolutely. I have been dancing for about three years now, is that relatively new? Anyway....talk about it constantly, at work and socially and because I enthuse about it so much and talk about it with a passion have got quite a few people to have a little dabble and try it out, unfortunately though only females!

Out of interest DB why do you warn people off?

Sorry DTS but I do have to defend DB on that one, although he is more than capable of defending himself, I have had one or two dances with Mr B and I have to say his dance is as good as his talk ....and I have seen him smile, I think

Huh, I thought I'd answered that, it must have got lost somewhere, dodgy Spanish cybercafes, I dunno...

Anyway, I think my answer was about Tango, I definitely don't generally try to recruit people into it, and I definitely tell them how hard it is.

But for MJ, I don't recruit either - it's pointless, men can't recruit other men and why bother recruiting women?

True enough. Although, let's be fair, I was a miserable little MJ dancer also, so I don't think it's the Tango at work in this case.

You know something, you may be right? I reckon I'd be rubbish at pure MJ now, I've done so little of it over the past year, I've almost forgotten who yanks whom
