Thank you Lory, Georgious Dancer, DB and Ducasi for having a different take on it, was beginning to wonder if I have done the right thing.

The thread was intended to ask what makes a good party not a bad one, my mood is lifting a little again

Hey Jay Jay, have not been on the forum all week so have just found your thread. First time I’ve known you to fret over anything. It will be fine and don’t forget you always have your guard dog there.

Anyway you have got good friends there to support you and enjoy the evening with you xx

Don’t worry it will be fine

Make sure you have plenty of food and serve it early, gives, them something to do other than drink
Have plenty of nice soft drinks
Buy or hire a second Party tent gazebo thingy and keep the whole thing in the garden

Hide the spirits and if you have a punch make sure no one spikes it

    Good luck

Hmmm, I'd suggest that even if you get the current slang correct, you'll still look daft and embarrass your kids. Best to not even try really.

    Oi! Speak for yourself!

I happen to know, most of my kids mates think I'm alright (as parents go )

Mine too, my kids are always quite pleased that they have a considerably younger dad than their mates.

I've always tried to encourage them to speak as correctly as possible, so I don't have to worry about looking daft by saying 'phat', 'sick', 'init' and so on. I figured that if I can get them to speak properly, they can choose to use slang with their friends, but they will be able to appear polite and well educated when they need to.
It must have worked because my eldest has told me that she has been accused of being 'posh' by her friends, but as I said to her, "better that than a strong Norfolk accent, like it or not people make assumptions about your intelligence when you have a strong rural accent".

Re: What Makes A Good Party?

Having had several parties and been to many more of my friends' I'd say the best thing is to be prepared for every eventuality and if something doesn't go quite to plan try to be calm about it. As Lory said, you'll get a lot further with your guests if they are on your side - you never know they might even help you tidy up and make breakfast in the morning!
The other thing is, I would advise you not to drink - I know it's fun to join in and have a good time too, but just in case something bad does happen at least you kow there'll be one sober person who can drive...
I had 'bouncers' at both my 18th and 21st B'day parties - and they had to turn away a band of gatecrashers at my 21st, so i am really glad they were there. Better to be safe.

Having said that, I'm sure your daughter has decent mates and the party will be a huge success - it certainly sounds like you have everything covered! Good luck with it and let us know how it goes .

I have been warned already that some of them want to be shown some dance moves....and I only have to be asked once! Does that make me 'phat?'

    For a fruit punch.

Would that be a gentle push, a little glare and walk away...

Looking forward to see your terse-ness, are you going to be brusque, snappy, clipped, concise, brief, curt, short or just abrupt?
