do you still get free trials of eve ?
Self moderated out of the Wow thread
I mean "interesting" as in both cool and annoyingly cr*p at the same time (sometimes) some skills cost millions to buy.. that's just for the skillbook (assuming you can find one.. EVE markets are different from WOW) you spend your hard earned to buy the skill then you start to learn it and despite spending all that money to get it you still have to spend 3 months to learn it.
There's no level per se in EVE. you just need certain skills to use certain items. And there's a hierarchy too. You can't learn Battleship lvl 1 until you have (I forget exactly.. it's been a while but) Cruiser lvl 3 you can't learn cruiser lvl 1 until you have (again a wild arsed guess) frigate lvl 3. you might jhave battleship lvl 2 .. enough for a Domi(nix) but not enough for a Mega(thron) but you suddenly find you can't fit that drone bay..You need engineering 5 and drone operation 4.. those guns need energy weapons 3 and something else 2 .. you get them in and you find you deplete your ships energy and cpu requirements after 5 shots.. aha you need to level up your energy management skills then
You see why I mean it's complex and frustrating at times but it also allows you to build a very personal character. You might not want any skills for mining or trading etc so you could concentrate your time on learning skills for PVP for example. You might want to create a character thats jack of all trades but master of one (The talents in WOW come close to this) or like me.. you might start off learning skills that do nothing but increase your stats.. Int, perception, etc .. What they do is affect how quickly you learn skills later. sure for the first month I'll be left behind and stuck with lousy gear but my ability to shave months.. nay.. years off my total career training time will pay back dividends in bucket loads.
My last character (sadly dead now) did that before.. I joined with a friend from my work who went straight into learning weapon and ship skills. A month later I was still in my frigate and he had a middle tier cruiser.. two months later he's in a top tier cruiser and some nice guns/drone.. I'm in my mid tier battleship and stretching the gap between us! A skill that would take him 5 days to learn I could learn in 3 ..
I like the skills system in EVE.. but it's a totally different game. Comparing one to the other is like comparing Apples to Oranges.
do you still get free trials of eve ?
mmm, still don't understand why would you think is cool to pay for a skill now and have it in one-two or three months... do you get increments in ability while you learn it or is it just a delayed thing?
Delayed thing.. and it's not "cool" it's a pain sometimes (having to wait for 3 months for a skill up for example) but what IS cool is being able to spend your time in whatever way you like. Me I'm a book worm.. barely leaving the space station except for the occasional mission (The EVE answer to Quests) and perhaps mining my way though a few asteroid fields in the process (I'll need that lovely ore later)
it does stop new players with loads of money jumping into the game and getting the biggest and best ships available to them.. you are forced into learning to play with less and building up. I guess the lvl thing in WOW is the same.. but in WOW if you spent 69 levels getting to BM spec you can spend 10g or so and respec in MM or SURV.. to go from top levels in say Battleship flying to say Mining speciallist or Research and Development .. well you're looking at a 6 month to 1 year delay there while you retrain.. of course, you don't lose your original skills.. so 1 year later you're a mining AND a battleship guru..
I always specialised in Mining and production with a smattering of R&D ..used to make a killing making and selling battleships !
Well, personally, I think that...
Oh bugger!! I can't contribute to this. I bought my anorak today, but I don't get it for another three months
if you played it you'd understand..
anyway here's a guide to EVE skills Guide:Skills and Attributes - EVEWiki
basically it's to stop people coming in and gearing up to the max within 5 mins.. it's no different to "Oh I went to a gold seller and got enough gold to buy a flying mount.. but I can't buy one for another 69 levels!"
Have just worked out my training schedule (of course this doesn't include downtime and time when I'm at work.. so expect to increase this timeframe by a factor of about 5 to 7)

As you can see it's going to take me a while to get back into my first battleship.. mind you it'll probably take me 3 times that length of time to afford to pay for it anyway
but if I didn't have to sleep, eat or go to work I could have it in just under two weeks

Hurumph !!
As I can no longer play neither EVE nor WOW due to my PC dying on me I'm having to put my monthly susbscription for both these MMORPGS on hold. No point paying for something I can't use.
Mind you .. I'm sure there's games out there somewhere that will run on my uber powerful laptop.. I mean it's got 256 mb of ram !! wow not to mention the blistering 600MHz processing power and the 20GB hard drive..
i dislike eve
yup.. and Minesweeper !
it's Dee - Eee -- Dee .. DEAD
Not sure. Powers up, drives spin.. no post test beep. Zilch, nada , zip. Checked the Cables, power supply, connections, GPU (switched to on board Graphics) , sound (Switched to onboard sound) , memory , peripherals, etc
It won't do anything for 10-15-20 restarts.. then it'll decide to start up. It'll work "ok" for a while. Occasionally the screen goes black, Sound stops, harddrive and CD/DVD roms stop spinning.. just for a second then it's fine again. It might flicker like that every 5 to 10 seconds for hours. Then it'll flicker and just.. go "off" .. not off completely. Lights are on but no-one's home.
Tested the power supply (my first suspect) but it tests out properly and has a steady output voltage within acceptable tolerances. Tested load over the devices one at a time. No idea.
Laptop allows me to check emails though.. just
I would normally buy a new one or at least build a new one.. but my spare cash is earmarked for the upcoming wedding at the mo.. no biggie. I don't need to play WoW or EVE.
thanks for the offer .. but it does what it needs to at the moment. A little more memory won't make that much of a difference really. perhaps make it a little faster but it'll still be incapable of running my processor/graphics intensive apps.
appreciate the offer though
when you come back to WoW do you fancy playing a nearly new (slightly frayed at the edges) lvl 69.9* hunter
(* I really should quantify that claim sometime.. I may be lvl 69.7 or lvl 69.8.. I may even be lvl 69.96! I wonder what %age of my require XP I am really away from 70 )
