Q...What benefits do Ceroc bring to a new franchisee

From my own personal experience I would say... nothing much

I wanted to teach for my local LeRoc club... I was told no.

I then contacted Ceroc to teach in a couple of areas they did not cover.

I was told, I need to find a venue, get it approved by Ceroc, be sponsoured by a Ceroc franchise to become a teacher, and then maybe they would consider me.

I also needed to pay them monies, even if I made a loss that week.

So I asked what local advertising they would do for me - answer ... nothing.

I did not need music lists or dancing routines.

    So I saw nil benifit...

No-one in the areas I was considering knew the "brand name" Ceroc... So I did not see the point in jumping through hoops, paying out cash, for nothing of value in return.

I set up my own business 30 years ago, (nothing to with dancing) but the idea of whom I might sell it to,or how, never crossed my mind

To be honest I never thought it was going to last 30 years

I was just following the advice of my mentor “find something you enjoy doing and get someone to pay you to do it”
A friend who recently became a Ceroc franchisee seems to be doing exactly that, as did a friend who set up as an independent

I'm even confident that I know what it is that I don't know. In fact, I don't even feel like a success. I always see what it could be rather than what it is. For example, if I have a capacity for 12 couples on a workshop, I worry when I've only got 8 couples. I wonder where I'm going to find the other 4 couples and do not feel like I've succeeded until the workshop is full. That doesn't mean I feel like a failure. It means I feel like I've got more to do.

To perpetuate the feeling on not succeeding, my action on filling a workshop is to immediately book a workshop for the people I've had to turn away - guess what? I really, really do have trouble filling that one.

I'd say that Ceroc bring information, part of the 'winning formula', the information you buy is not worthless by any means, but it is true that information would quickly loses it's worth to an experienced, observant, willing to ask questions etc. dancer who can work it out for themselves. Whether it's worth the actual cost to buy, that's a different matter, I'd say 'are you mad?'

The 'brand' would be worth something in an area where a Ceroc franchise used to exist, but no longer does, but otherwise, I'm not sure the brand means anything outside existing dance circles, so not much help there.

I'm sure there are a whole load of complex reasons why Ceroc have lost market share in England in the years I've been dancing, but IMO the cost of setting up and running a franchise has got to be the major one.

Also, we all know a well run, established club of whatever flavour is fairly hard to replace by a rival, but I'd hate to be a Ceroc franchise whose territory is being encroached upon by a half-decent independant, you'd be fighting with one arm and two legs tied behind your back.

Bedford has had at least six different attempts at "encroachment", and all have brought something worthwhile to the fray. Two of the organisations have gone on to succeed in other locations. Three died very quickly. In spite of that we have yet another new contender, and definitely without any arms or legs tied. All limbs can be seen flailing about. Definitely a non-Ceroc launch strategy. Tomorrow I hope to discover whether we have an MJ breakthrough or breakdown.

Yeah. Alan Titchmarsh & Charlie Dimmock, IIRC. Charlie's the one on the right.

I think Sproggs thinks that me and Steven666 are responsible for giving him -5 rep. Both me and Steven only have a rep power of 1 so I gess he has upset a few people with his comments and made himself unpopular.

Funny how the forum mirrors real life sometimes isn't it?

Anyway...back to your question. There are plenty on benefits going with a Ceroc Franchise providing you understand the potential pitfalls.

You could ask some other independent organisers how they are doing without having a Ceroc Franchise...there are plenty of them on here...some a lot more successful than others...

But from my point of view it has been very successful and profitable over the years while being in control of my own club...

Also I seem to have more success with getting lots of friends from my classes than from my comments on here but that is reallife this is virtual

Go for it Martin and please let me know how works out for you.Well I hope
