    Injured Seagull

I have found an injured baby seagull in the road. Its unable to fly and limping.

Have caught it, put it in a box and called the out of hours RSPB number who advised to wait till the morning with it and to call them again to see if they have the funding to take it in.

Anyone have any better ideas of what to do with it as I dont really want to leave it in a box overnight.

    Re: Injured Seagull

RSPB do not take in injured birds, they are a conservation charity rather than a wildlife santuary. Do you mean the RSPCA? They are the agency to contact if you find an injured bird, or else a local vet or wildlife sanctuary. See here. Often the RSPCA though do not have resources for injured gulls, there just isn't the funds, but they will be able to advise.

Was it definitely injured rather than just unable to fly? Sometimes baby birds fall out of nests and are not able to fly, in that case the best thing to do is leave them as the parents will usually be able to hear them. See here.

Hopefully it will be OK in the box overnight and the RSPCA will be able to give advice in the morning.

I know you’re not in London Lee, but you might try giving London Wildcare Trust - Home a look. They may be able to point you in the right direction at the very least.

Lesser Black-Backed, Greater Black-Backed and Herring gulls are generally regarded as vermin and a health hazard, so I doubt you'll find many organisations that would be too keen to nurture one back to health. It might have been kinder to put it out of its misery instead.

So are pigeons though, and the London Wildcare Trust definitely take them in. Random Acts Of Reality :: Pigeons

I'm not saying it's a likely option for Lee, but at least there's hope....

For injured birds it's best to keep them confined and in the dark - that way they won't stress as much.
If no other organisations are interested in the bird, you could try the local zoo - as they keep live specimens of all types of birds (vermin or otherwise).
All the best with your quest.

our local vet will treat wildlife for free so long as its not out of hours
I would do as the rspb say and keep it quiet in a box overnight see how it is in the morning

I'm with you on this one Baruch. I wouldn't touch it with a barge poll.

    Batnurse to the rescue!!!

Phone your local vet. They will have the details of wildlife rescue centres in your area. The RSPCA are rubbish and I speak from many years experience as a VN. Meanwhile, do as Saligal says - keep it somewhere dark and offer it a small dish of water.

    Seagull problem is now sorted.

Anyone want to come around for a BBQ?

Just kidding. I let it go in a neighbours garden (with their permission) as it's parents were calling for it for a few hours. It wasn't there this morning and no trace of fethers so I assume it managed to fly away.

Not necessarily, it would depend on the species

And how the bird was killed. There are certain species that can be humanely trapped and killed under a general licence. (Don't think you'd want to eat them though. I have had pigeon stew - but that was in an African village!)

So it's official then Dave - I am a woman. I was the first to suggest killing it. Oh well, they must have performed the surgery when I was asleep. Explains why I like dancing with men, doesn't it?
