Caravans - love them or hate them?

Me, Gav and our six (count them) children are spending a week in a caravan shortly.

The kids absolutely love it and I'm glad they will have fond memories of caravan holidays when they grow up. We are staying at Havens Devon Cliffs which is lovely...we've been there lots of times before, but I fear I'm turning in to a caravan snob.

We went earlier in the year to Highfields in Clacton and I will not be returning. I think the straw that broke the camels back was seeing a 70 year old bloke with pierced nipples walking around the camp site in his underpants drinking special brew at 9 O'Clock in the morning and swearing like a trooper

I love caravan holidays, but people like Mr Pensioner pierced nipples do spoil it for the rest of us.

Anyone else caravaning this year or would you rather put acid in your eyes?

Might be roughing it in some villa later in the year, so that I guess is as far as id go

It is of course a big growth area and I’m sure a lots of fun

Did do the caravanette /camping stuff as a kid

However I think if I took a tent on holiday id ask where do I put it in my 5 star hotel

People who wilfully drag sheds along the Public Highway should be forced off the road at the earliest opportunity and be banned from driving indefinitely...

Acid in eyes and you can also chuck in an excrement (frozen) so that i can bash myself repeatedly on the head with it.

    Some camping sites are great.

Last one I went to was in the summer. We got a group together - kids and adults.

Right next to a river with ramps to lauch boats.

They had log cabins, static caravans and camping/caravaning sites.

Must admit I went for the log cabin, complete with all the trimings.

Our group also brought up a campervan, 8 tents (for the kids) a speed boat, canoe, surf boards, wind-surfers, skis, doughnuts and wakeboards. Someone even brought some fishing rods (I am not good at fishing, but still managed to catch some).

On site they had BBQ's that you just rock up to and cook on. We just sent the kids off to do the BBQ - they had a lot of fun and it was edible (just)

Some of the guy's had 4WD's so we also discovered some out of the way sandy beaches.

Gav, you need to work on your lats and your legs.

Too much bench press, shoulders and arms.

You are looking a bit deformed. Where is the V shape and the legs!!!

Maybe FM can shead some light?

Don't get me started! I'm terrible for neglecting my lats and was just talking about the very same thing with my training partner yesterday.

Back to topic, though (well, not really, but back to the topic that's off-topic!), yes, he really should work his lats and legs more!

Nah, old picture. I saw it happening and now I'm fairly well balanced.

It doesn't count if you just talk about it over a pie and a pint.

I had a great couple of holidays in a fixed caravan when I was a kid. These days they can be really posh too. The caravans I've stayed in at Blaze were great (though its essential you get one with good heating throughout!)

That said, caravans on the road are awful – there should be a law against it!

Some of the caravan parks in Sydney have become little resorts for families!
The one that my family used to go to when I was a kid now has a cafe and beauty-spa on-site! Central Coast Accommodation, Caravan and Holiday Park - Ocean Beach Holiday Park | Park Facilities
I guess it helps to check out as much as possible about the place before you go. Most places have websites with photos. If you really want to see how close the places are to the beach etc then check them out on google maps (cos some are shonky and call themselves beachside when infact they're not!)
Another thing to check is sites online for recommendations or ratings.
Overall, if you have that many people - especially kids - I'd make sure you have an "annex" attached to the caravan, or make sure it's a large van. This helps on the off chance that it rains and the kids are cooped up for a while - adding more space.
I loved our holidays at the beach at the caravan park... but those were the days when the only rule was that you had to be back at the 'van when the street lights came on.
If you don't like being with those who keep their 'vans onsite.... then maybe ask for a site that's further away from that area and ask if the amenities are near the spot you want.
Have fun! hope the weather's great for your trip!

p.s. - take some ear-plugs... cos the walls of caravans are really thin!
