    Flirt or not

It appears that dancing works differently for folk - and brings out different elements to each. Imho, it seems that there is one common trait that exists. As a novice dancer, (I'm no expert) i could be mistaken? Do we knowingly or un-knowingly flirt?

Nooooo. No flirting in partner dance. Ever. It's the main reason for the rotation system in MJ classes - so that couples are never together for long enough to test their anti-flirt vows and general resolve.

There was a brief outbreak of flirting back in '63, and another slightly more serious trend towards Nearly Meaningful Glances in the late nineties, but that was quoshed with minimal casualties, and we all breathed a huge sigh of relief and reestablished the minimum-safe-distance and no-eye-contact regulations.

Now, luckily, most teachers are pretty well trained in what to look out for, and are well prepared with their Anti-Flirtation Measures - ranging from scornful comments up to judicious use of a fire hose, with the last resort measures of Immediate Venue Closure & Quarantine ready to be sprung into action at a moment's notice.

    Hope this answers your question?

Despite everything Straycat says being absolutely true and flirting being outlawed back in the late 60s, I'm afraid it does still happen. What I'm about to tell you here is highly classified, so please keep this to yourself. Within this very forum there is a small underground movement of people who do still flirt on the dance floor. Although they are very careful and do so only in the utmost secrecy, our omnipotent moderator actually keeps a list of them. It can be found here.

Unfortunately I was a victim of the brief outbreak of flirting in '63 - hence my birth... unfortunately my parents relapsed again in '65 (which was not widely reported, but resulted in my younger brother).

I am told this is now under control and dancers now have the "flirt gene" removed.

    Re: Flirt or not

The dance lyrics may call for some pseudo flirting.

    I enjoy flirting.

Is it acting or real on the dancefloor?

    How does one tell?

Some people don't have a flirting gene, it's a knack.

Though it can be learnt - I saw a book on it in a bookshop.

No doubt discussed elsewhere - but where exactly is the tattoo situated? Hmm?

That list is definitely not accurate, I don't even know the meaning of the word flirt!

    Re: Flirt or not

    flirt
    1. .to court triflingly or act amorously without serious intentions; play at love; coquet.
Nothing trifing about dancing. Everyone is very serious about their intentions to play at love.
    2. .to trifle or toy, as with an idea: She flirted with the notion of buying a sports car.
I've never been toyed with on the floor - no self-respecting woman would do that to a man!
    3. .to move with a jerk or jerks; dart about: butterflies flirting from flower to flower. –verb (used with object)
Ah, now we're talking: I've moved with jerks on the dance floor. I'm sure that several followers would testify to moving with jerks on the floor.
    4. .to give a sudden or brisk motion to; wave smartly, as a fan.
Yup, several sudden or brisk motions used when dancing... normally by those jerks mentioned above.
    5. .to throw or propel with a toss or jerk; fling suddenly. –noun
... it's those jerks again... they've now become tossers.
    6. .Also, flirter. a person who is given to flirting.
people who have give in to flirting on the dance floor? naaa - it'll never catch on.
    7. .a quick throw or toss; sudden jerk or darting motion.
we are back to the jerks and tossers again - although I'm assuming that they are now playing darts rather than dancing.

    Re: Flirt or not

    Non verbal flirting

Ladies used to flirt with their fans. Different fan positions meant all sorts.
    Not interested, am intererested etc.

There was also flirting done with those long gloves they wore.
If the top button was undone, the lady was "Up for it"

Pity the poor lady whose button had accidently come undone.

Ankle chains and red shoes were the signs of a Lady of the Night.

    Anyone know any others?
