Another Steven666 rep giving out thread

    (ignore the title)

Is your online persona different to your real life persona?

I do wonder what people, who I haven't met yet, are really like. Should I be subconciously judging people based on posts before I do.

The real me is a socially enept, shy retard who confines oneself in a shell.

Online I'm just a socially enept retard.

So do you judge people before meeting them and are you different from the person that people judge you to be from your posts?

So, are you saying that we shouldn't form opinions on what people are like from the way they post?!?

I think the word 'judge' isn't necessarily the right one. It sounds... well... judgmental!

But of course people are going to form opinions on what people are like from the way they post. For example, everyone knows that I'm an opinionated so-and-so who doesn't take idiots lightly!

Of course it is I'm neither Dreadful nor Scathing in real life. Quite dull and quiet actually.

And Gus isn't judgemental and Andy isn't so provacative (well, depends on your definition )

    Also, Gadget is quite quiet

I'm pretty much as filthy as I can get away with in real life, so people can't really say they didn't know what to expect when they meet me for the first time...

Re: Another Steven666 rep giving out thread

I'm the same person on here as I am in real life. There are some that seem to come across differently on here, to when you meet them in reality. But as those people are capable of thinking and writing the stuff they do, then surely that means they still have those traits in real life, but they just aren't as vocal with them.
For instance, someone that is friendly and happy go lucky, when you meet them in real life situations, but nasty and rude on here, still has those rude/nasty traits but they just control them better off of the forum.

They are writing fiction, not being rude or insulting to actual people, I think there is a difference. (I hope there is a difference!!)

Of course there is a difference between fiction and non-fiction, but what makes you think everything anyone posts on forums is entirely non-fiction? You got some evidence People can quite happily lie on a CV in real life where there is something at stake, how easy in comparison is it to have your, already seperated from real life, online persona in a forum/chat/myspace page/whatever, entirely made up ? Or even slightly made up? and which is which ? Of course I see what you are saying - when people reply to others they really shouldn't be addressing someones non-fictional persona with their nasty fictional one - but how can you tell they're not playing the game? People take offence too easily on these forum things most of the time

On-line I have time to think between my brain and my fingers that I don't have when talking: hence I tend to talk even less sense in person

You can't tell, but isn't it better to not risk upsetting someone and hurting their feelings, for the sake of entertainment? What may seem a small funny insult to the insulter could be devastatingly hurtful to the insultee. Some people are prone to depression or are more sensitive and an ill thought out bit of nastiness could become a major turmoil to some.
I don't see the logic in being nasty to someone online, if they don't think it's the correct thing to do face to face.

If you see online "chats", live or otherwise, as simply an act, then you may choose a persona that is confrontational, rude or whatever that may not be like your own. The entertainment may be playing the role itself, not the risk of upsetting someone (and if you did its not "you" thats doing the upsetting). (note: I'm not that mercenary on here btw but i have been elsewhere). Reminds me of the character in Samuel Butlers 19th century novel, "The Way of all Flesh" where he wrote books as if he was high up in the church when he was simply a bookseller.

fantasy, my dear, fantasy* this is not face to face, which is surely the point.

*hey, does that sound patronising? you owe me a slap then, sorry!

Not so sure ..... I think whether someone should take offence is down to the indivdual on the recieving end, on the person dishing it out. As for what is said, there's no doubt that some people say some pretty offensive things here .... if they said it face to face they would have (quite rightly ?) have to deal with the consequenecs and maybe get their lights punched out.

absolutely, but it is NOT a face to face conversation and the assumption should be that the people "abusing" you are shouting at the screen, the avatar, or the text they see, not YOU personally - unless they do actually know you well, in which case they DO have your image in their head and probably Do mean you directly. You yourself have been subject to overreaction many times Gus, due to throwing out ODA topics that some people took to be personal opinion and occasionally a personal slagging off aimed at them - do you consider such reactions entirely justified ?
