She was a brilliant dancer and a Movie Star (in the true meaning of the words).

I hope they put Brigadoon & Singin' in the Rain on telly soon.

As a kid, I remember countless occasions on which a film would come on the telly (they never advertised 'future attractions' then) and my dad would say:

"Ooh. Cyd Charisse is in this. She had great legs, you know."

Dep you crack me up - clearly there is some persistent bubble round the borders are you sure you don't live in Brigadoon. Mind you if you did you'd know her, she starred in that movie

In that period where dance was a regular feature in the successful movies of the day her name was up there along people like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly etc. Should put her in perspective.

Just in case, see the attached link to get a better idea of why people might think the dance world has lost one of its greats

heard of all four names, but I can't recall ever watching a film in which any of them feature.

But do musicals/dance films add anything of import to dance?

So back to my original question
    Is she important to dance?

Especially when you consider that he is old enough to have seen these films at the cinema.

I suppose it's akin to saying I've heard of The Beatles but never heard any of their songs.

Was Cyd important to dance was a question - If you ask that question then the answer really has to be "not at all - to your dancing anyway"

Anyway I think she was fab a great dancer and one heck of a good looking woman - If I'd stood on Andy McG's shoulders we might have just about been as tall as her though!

    Re: Cyd Charisse RIP

    From her imdb entry:

Her little brother couldn't pronounce the word 'sis' and said 'sid' instead. This became her nickname. Her agent refused to allow her to use the stage name Sid because it was 'too masculine' so they feminised it to 'Cyd'.

And Charisse was her first husband's surname (with a teeny spelling change).

She would have had the lead in Easter Parade but she damaged her knee; she would have had the lead in An American in Paris but she was pregnant.
