I liked Steps, although not as much as S Club (with or without the 7). Faye was my favourite although only once she lost the silly blonde dreadlocks...

And there I was thinking that Duffy was Amy Winehouse-lite.

"Looking good" is part of their profession - in fact, it's almost the only part of their profession. If they were actually talented - like Duffy, or Amy Winehouse - they could get away with different looks. As they're not, they have to sell their image. So I think it's legit to talk about their image.
Well, a trifle harsh. Claire had a spectacular voice. The others were run-of-the-mill manufactured band material, but she could manage on her own.

I suspect that there's something else going on though, because she couldn't choose - or couldn't afford - good songs after Steps split up. A great voice isn't the only talent you need to succeed in pop.

The only Steps track I can recall is "Tragedy" - so the only thing I can remember them for is doing a mediocre cover of a cheesy pop track. And the only other thing I can remember about them was that one of them had a silly name and was gay.

Whereas I can remember lots of tracks from Take That (version 1), S Club 7, and others.

Well, I'm not saying they were a latter day Beatles. Just that 'talentless' was a bit harsh.

They are, however, the sort of band whose songs might turn up as lost classics - a bit like the rehabilitation of the BeeGees years after the death of disco.
