    TalkTalk, μTorrent & LimeWire

I've very recently changed my ISP from BTInternet to TalkTalk and noticed an alarming reduction in performance.
Has any TalkTalk user managed to get their EchoLife HG520s router's port forwarding set correctly. I've manually set the port forwarding for μTorrent, LimeWire and WoW but it's made no difference to my connectivity and download speeds, which are pathetic compared to BTInternet & BT's HomeHub.

I don't know if they still do, but when my M&D were with them, they used packet sniffing to more or less block all P2P activity. They were one of the worse I believe. No idea if they still are.

This is allowed under their T&C (like a lot of ISP's these days) where they will apply blocks if they decide you are 'degrading their network'.

I don't know about the ISP but re LimeWire, I think my computer got a couple of very nasty viruses from downloading music from this website. I can't be certain but by process of elimination, I think I must have been infected by Limewire. I ended up having to wipe my entire computer and start again loading everything from scratch. I had all the usual virus checkers in place but it didn't help.

I've been using LimeWire for about 3 years or so, since v1.02 I think and haven't had a problem with viruses, only fake files but that's improving with each version upgrade.
I began the process of returning to BT today and would advise anybody thinking of moving to TalkTalk to seriously reconsider. TalkTalk, in my experience, is too slow compared to BT and its supplied router, EchoLife HG520s, won't transmit through more than one wall.

I'm on Talk Talk - I didn't have any broadband before but I understand it is slower than BT. But the deal, including broadband, phone line and calls, is still so much cheaper than my BT package when I still had to pay for daytime calls - I can put up with it not being quite as fast!

If Talk Talk doesn't work well with P2P, would that be why its slow to download BBCi programmes? Any settings I can change to improve this?(Answers in simple terms please...I'm not a geek!)

Limewire is notorious for being a repository for viruses - one of the faves is to put up a file to crack the licence of for example MS office or it's an archive file of the next big album to be released. The only time I go near there now is to search for something out of print.

even more off topic though - just heard an interview with a guy at the BPI re the Coldplay album release. They along with Virgin media will be sending out letters to people where they (or anyone in their house) has been spotted downloading particular files from P2P sites. I can see the downloaders quaking in their boots

My broadband is with Sky. I've got nothing to compare it to as I've never had any other package so I don't know if its slow or not but its very good value. I signed up to the TV package and the broadband was free. The equipment and installation for the TV stuff was free and I've just got the basic TV station package which is £15 a month. I had to buy a wireless router but now we're running 3 laptops off it so for that price I think its pretty good!

It takes over an hour to download a 1 hour BBCi programme so I suppose that's quite slow? But you don't have to sit and watch it -I just start it off and go and do something else.

what would Limewire do for me?

    What is p2p?

Should I avoid or use either?

LimeWire allows one to download files from a multitude of Peer to Peer networks but as ClevedonBoy says, I wouldn't use it to download warez files as they often have trojans and viruses in the keygen, patch or crack.

You could use LimeWire to download a music track to listen to before you decide if its worth buying

Actually they don't, but many virus checkers report them as such. But you can run everything in a virtual machine to be sure, that what i do (if i ever downloaded such things_)

Amazon is easier, you can get a snippet of most tracks.

Its simply a way to get a choice of lots of things to download - some legal, some not. So if you want access to such files - go for it.

The size of the file is related to the quality of the video it contains, not the length of the video - so it may, or may not, be slow

What a dreadfully foolish thing of the Scathe to suggest! If you were confident of that, why use a virtual machine? You could simply download a Warez application, install it, hit the patch/crack.exe or setup.exe and away you go, free use of any software you choose to download.

Warez downloaded from ALL P2P and Torrent sites have the potential to contain viruses, trojans and malware that can catch the unwary and leave them victim to all sorts of malicious code. I only ever use LimeWire for music files and would say to everybody "Don't use it to download software applications" regardless of what you might read on this forum.
If you download application files from Torrent sites, run your anti-virus software on them before opening them.

This also applies to Warez downloaded for Symbian phones.

Virus checkers will report certain things as trojans or viruses when they clearly are not. But I wouldn't assume anything, and I tend to use a Virtual Machine to test install a lot of software before I bloat the 'real' machine with it. Except games of course, never good on a VM

You could, but I'd like to think the majority of the forum are honest folks and would only ever do that for research purposes

Warez downloaded from ALL P2P and Torrent sites have the potential to contain viruses, trojans and malware
I would go further and suggest ANYTHING downloaded from ANYWHERE on the internet has that potential. Including email attachments.
