They probably should not be together at all, either way round, when the cabaret was the "chance to dance" winning Space one - Angelina, one of the dancers, had a fabulous costume for the Rio carnival fancy dress and almost missed the judging. Or was it the other way round. Now I forget but they were right next to each other, which wasn't the best.
It's just dawned on me that I have booked on the September Southport too
For me to be so organised and forward thinking is really really rare
Thank you to everyone for making southport so fantastic! I didnt want to come home at all. I giggled most of the way there and back in the car with nic and blueshoes.... I now know some interesting chat up lines...Although you can blame blueshoes for eating all the brownies so they never made it to dancing.
The chalet was fun and Caz, wuzzle and PMJD were all great to share with. I socialised more this time which was great and made it too my first bbq (was too shy to approach it in the past).
Thanks for everyone for the lovely dances, and those brave souls who even gave WCS a go with me. My dance of the weekend has to go to Nic, she had me laughing so much i couldnt dance :-)
Only downsides for me were the amount of WCS music in the blues room. I dont mind a bit of it but i just could get into the blues room as much this time and the wcs music didnt always make me want to dance. But considering everything else was fantastic, it was an amazing weekend!
Just really sad i cant make it to september
The good:
The tent, Nigels & Phunkymans sets in the main room on Sunday
The bad:
The stifling heat especially in the Latin room on Saturday, surely ventilation isn't rocket science????
Plus the mainroom sound on Saturday, all super loud screech and distortion from the main speakers whilst the rest weren't working, sounded worse than my local venue when it's cheap kit is in use....
The Good.
The new marquee was really good and probably the only solution possible to the loss of the old dance den. It could have benefited from the provision of chairs for the evening session but that would mean having a supply of chairs and people to move them in and out. On the Saturday night I did comment to Arjay that last year the WCS dancers would have needed only a third of the marquee but that it was now full with people waiting around the edges – I think we might need a bigger tent. How good the Marquee will be in the colder temperatures of September and Febuary remains to be seen.
I loved the BBQ and really should have worn a T Shirt with my forum name on it. There are so many people whose posts I have read on the forum and would like to meet so I really should have done so myself.
Dancing with old friends is always good but I do so love enjoying dances with people I have never met before.
Finding out that just about every leader has a similar love/hate relationship with WCS as I do.
The Bad
Finding that two people that I like very, very much had come to the end of their relationship and each in their own way was finding the situation difficult.
It would appear that there is no longer such a thing as a swing/blues room anymore as there seemed to be close to naff all of either played at Southport. I know all the DJs want acclaim and the way to do that seems to be to play what is flavour of the moment. I don’t see the point of playing WCS music (yes I know you can MJ to some of it – but it is still not swing/blues) in the swing/blues room when there is supposed to be to be two WCS sets being played in the marquee. If the DJ has no intention of playing swing/blues then they should not accept the DJ slot.
My partner (Commis Chef) coming back from dances (particularly with CJ) and being all ecstatic about the experience. I then ask her what is it that they do that makes them so good and she has no words to describe it. Honestly, she is absolutely useless as a dance spy.
Commis Chef being refused 7 times in 90 minutes on Sunday night in the blues room only to have them immediately turn around and dance with the next Pretty Young Thing. Having Commis Chef in floods of tears at 3am (and again in the train home the next day) is not how I wanted to remember the last night of this Southport. In the past I have tried to be understanding of the motivations of the WCS “elite” (ie wanting to focus on competitions and progress their own dancing to the highest level, they are not a cliue – they are a group of friends) and I know a number of dancers at this level that are superb ambassadors for WCS but I can only say that there are some people in this group that are letting these WCS ambassadors down very badly. Unless they really do only want to dance with the same 30 dancers for the next 20 years and feel that everyone else can just sod off.
At the moment Commis Chef doesn’t want any involvement in the WCS scene and this renders any thoughts I had about persisting with WCS a bit irrelevant. I can be very persuasive with her but at the moement she is incandesant with rage and humiliation and I don't rate my chances of success.

Cheffy baby steer commis chef over to me next dance that we are at together and I will leave her a quivering wreck who will never look at another westie in her life.
DTS XXX XXX
I'm really, really sad to read that.
I would have been happy to lead her, although I know it's not the same as dancing with a guy and I'm not a great lead.
I don't know who exactly you are talking about, but one thing I have found too in the past in that sometimes when people have had a drink too many, they're more likely to refuse a dance and be all weird. It's happened to me too. Go figure. Also I got refused too by friends who were just too tired when I asked, or didn't feel like dancing to the song (not everything was great for wcs in the blues room). They are friends and people who I know like dancing with me, so no offence there.
Still, that's no excuse. I feel really bad for Commis Chef
Commis Chef fully understands the tired/hot/thirsty/need a change of shirt/need a loo break aspect of of refusals. To be turned down without reason and then the same person turn 180 degrees to grab the next person she doesn't understand. I tried postulating that they may have promised dances to other people and were making good on that promise but 7 times in 90 minutes is stretching the credulity of that proposition. I was trying desparately to find explanations so that she didn't feel so crap but I feel I may have failed.
That's really disappointing to hear. I don't know (or want to know) who the individuals are but one thing for sure at the moment is that there is such an imbalance of competent WCS leaders to followers on the UK scene that people know they can act like this and still be assured of a constant stream of requests for dances.Originally Posted by Chef
Is that me you're talking about?
The only people I had no qualms in refusing dances to this weekend were those I had already danced a number of times with. This was partly as I realised when going out Sunday evening that I had danced with a grand total of 1 person that I didn't already know over the course over the whole weekend. I made a conscious effort to seek out some new people that night and my evening was all the better for it.
1????????????
Are you serious????????
Do you never ask then or just ask yor said friends.
So that, to me, is just not right at all.
I ain't the biggest asker in the world but 1????
So are non known people too intimedated to ask you? Do you make yourself available to dance? Do you refuse?
1?
Oh dear...
Yes, serious.
To be honest, I am not the best person at asking for dances. I would hate to be in the position that followers find themselves in at most dance events. I probably had a ratio between 85% being asked to 15% asking at Southport
I am also fortunate to be asked to dance by a lot of people so sometimes I will sit and watch/take a rest/get a drink rather than ask someone for a dance.
As for 'So are non known people too intimedated to ask you? Do you make yourself available to dance? Do you refuse?', I think the answers are
Don't know
Sometimes, sometimes not
Only if it's someone I know pretty well
EDIT: Neg Rep for my last post S666 - why? Remind you too much of the girl you charmingly titled the b*tch in the bikini? - and you wonder why she didn't want to dance with you

Erm...1500 or so people yet it took so long to dance with two people you didn't know. Did you know practically everybody there?
I just don't understand it.
I personally aim for for people I don't know as people I do know I can usually dance with week in week out. Doesn't mean I refuse people I know, I just wouldn't neccessarily make a beeline for them at such a weekender.
Why the neg rep? I didn't like reading that number "1".
The BitB doesn't know me and neither do you. Refusing seemed second nature to her...

Well, I would guess that I knew at least half, and prob more like three quarters of the followers in the blues room where I spent most of my time so it wasn't like I just stuck in a little group of 20 people or whatever.
And the whole point of my post was that I didn't like the fact it was only 1 person which is why I resolved to do something about it that night, hence why I don't understand the neg rep :bangs head against wall smiley:
Well, she came and asked me to dance at Southport. My point is that giving someone a name like that says a lot more about you than about her.Originally Posted by s666

I try and assure as many people as I can that WCS is a friendly bunch of people who will dance with anyone and that the often-heard perception is not really true. Stories like this make me question what I am saying.
What makes this even more ridiculous is that CC is a fabulous dancer! It just doesn't make sense that she would be turned down .
There are genuine reasons to refuse dances. I refused a handful over the weekend at various points myself as I was either dripping with sweat or just plain exhausted. To turn around after refusing and then dance with someone else though is just inexcusable.
I know it will never happen and, to be honest, probably for the best but it is these situations where I favour naming and shaming.
Nor does your spelling....
I asked someone - not exactly rocket science.
Don't agree. Nothing to be gained by it. I can't see the type of person likely to do that to be someone who would be shamed by being named.
