    Death of our Dance Halls

What is happening to the dance halls of Britain. This year we have lost one of the greats Ashtons in London and there are plans also to close the Ritz Ballroom at Brighouse. You would expect with the resurrgence of dance in recent times that these places would be given a new lease of life.

Too true. Last year it was the Hammersmith Palais, and I believe that the Rivoli is still under threat - watched a programme called "Disappearing London" presented by Suggs the other day and he covered it there. Mind you, I live up the road from there and still haven't been

I believe lots of venues are expensive to run plus escalating insurance costs dont help.

Even theatres struggle to make ends meet, so what chance dance halls.

Would dancers pay more to go to these venues if the rates to the organisor went up and they had to pass on these costs???

Most big dance halls only get used in evenings as I understand in some areas their is a demise in the Tea Dance traditional week day events, again cost of public liability.

    Your thoughts?

That's too much of an open-ended question. By how much would the entry go up, and how often are we talking about dancing there? It also depends on how much disposable income an individual has (as well as how keen they are, travelling costs, etc.). Too many imponderables.

A small increase on say a weekly dance of a pound or two might be OK, putting up a monthly dance by 3 or 4 might be OK. Doubling the cost of a weekly or monthly dance would probably put people off - even with an explanation, they might suspect the venue manager of trying to line their own pockets.
