How much is a cleaner worth?

I have been after a cleaner for a while, but I have always found friends or recomendations are much better than going to the general market.

My son has found a friend from work , who also does cleaning and is looking for work cleaning. He told me, from what he sees at work she is very perdantic about cleaning, when she gets that job to do.

He works in a theme park restuarant.

Thing is he told me, she charges more for cleaning that they make at the theme park, so he thought I would not be interested.

I explained to him... you wait tables, work in a bar etc. that is a lot easier than slogging your guts out cleaning up a house, so of course, when she is cleaning she is worth more.

So do you think cleaning a house is worth more than working in a restuarant?

I know my son does not want to do it, and I sure do not want to do it, my PA does not want to do it (I did try).

I have somebody to clean my flat in London and pay her £8 an hour. She does a great job too. I have been trying to get somebody to clean my house in Glasgow, but have been quoted upwards of £12 an hour! It's not exactly skilled work, although it is hard to find somebody who is good at it. I think it's worth a bit more than the basic wage a bar person or waiter gets, but they also get tips to supplement their income.

Which is kinda going rate here.

That is kinda crazy... maybe someone from the forum, lives in Glasgow and wants some part time work...

I do have a lot of respect for cleaners, but 12 pounds an hour is more than the job is worth.

I work for a cleaning contractor and we pay our central London cleaners minimum wage £5.52 per hour, but you can't get away with that for domestic cleaners...you need to pay more to get someone who is self motivated and honest. Our cleaners are overseen by management...if we left them to their own devices they'd do sod all and rob all the computers.

I know someone who sacked their cleaner cos he found out she was playing with his drawer full of sex toys and watching his porn.

I'd rather do the cleaning myself than have a stranger nosing through my stuff.

Re: How much is a cleaner worth?

It can be difficult to get people to want to clean-up after someone else (especially when it comes to cleaning toilets!), and so pay has to be more to entice people to want to do it.
Just an FYI - we've found with our office that you pay for what you get when it comes to Sydney office cleaners. The current ones we have a shyte and they are cheap as. The previous ones were brilliant and were very thorough. Unfortunately management is too tight to get good ones.
Some dirty jobs pay additional bonuses - eg "dirt money" to make up for having to do the yucky work. Not sure they still pay these in Sydney now - especially since all the new pay regulations have come in.
So is a "waiting" job as dirty as a cleaning job?

    Surely this is the point

A good cleaner /gardener or someone who takes you stuff away and irons it is worth what you think there worth

If you earn £12 an hr yourself your going to have a different out look to someone who earns £900 an hr.

Way, way back I worked as an office cleaner in an all male crew. All the others I found out about (I only lasted a fortnight) were ex-cons. All of us had access to highly confidential material. My Father worked on front door security at the time. While the ex-cons were roaming the building he was denying access to a a very irate manager who wanted to work out of hours.

I would say no, but my son does come back wearing food on his shirt, but not reconstituted food.

Not really, a job is worth, what a job is worth. If you get someone who is good at that job, then it is good to recognise that and pay them a bit more.

That does not mean you go over the top.

When you add up how many hours I spend on this forum when I'm supposed to be working, I probably do earn £900 per hour, for hours actually worked.

That is why my PA has no internet on the work PC, and checks her mobile phone in at the door...

I can understand the 'no internet' rule, I know I'd get a lot more done if I didn't have access to it, but the mobile phone? I'd tell you to poke ya job. Mind you, if you choose a career as a PA, you gotta expect to work for...well...all sorts of people.

Yeah but.... she would text like there is no tomorrow.... even when we were working on stuff together, she would be texting and tell me "it's ok, I can text and still focus on what we are doing"... so I would wait, until she finished texting, and then get on with the job she is paid to do.

She can pick up her messages and text's at the end of the day.

I am not a total monster , she has a kid, who comes round to the office (my home), and the kid does take up a bit of time. This is fine, and we sometimes break away and spend time with the kid. This I am happy with... doing stuff outside of work, in work time, is not part of the deal.

Did she charge extra for that?

Don't suppose you have her name and number, just to, eh, make sure I don't give her a job if she happens to be in Glasgow...
