Well, a primitive form of democracy anyway. And still a reasonable amount of freedom of speech. We do lead the world in the use of CCTV though.

They've only started linking us since about 1950. Except when we didn't join them in Vietnam, of course. Oh, and during the Suez crisis.

And now, we are basically an American colony.

Wonder who our next President will be? It's make or brake for Obama and Clinton in Pennyslvania today, then one of them has to run against McCain.

I asked a well travelled friend and he reckons the Norweigens like the English.
    Any comments Little Monkey?

Now this does appear to apply to the British, rather than the English, but according to this report, if given the choice over 50% of us would choose to give up our British passports, and 22% of us would rather be... French.

Perhaps we should forget April 23rd and start celebrating le quatorze juillet instead.

    Going back to our past?

William the Conqueror of Normandy was French as were following Kings.

Britain was a French Colony - everything was written in French, the criminal courts spoke French. Religion was in Latin.

The Knights who went off to the Crusades wore the St.George flag as tabards, but they were actually Francks.

Richard I ,The Lionheart (Robin Hood one) was French, he only visited Britain twice I think, he taxed the British high to fund his Crusades against Saladin, who was much more of a gentleman than the invaders.

(I may be wrong on some points)

And we introduce anti-terror laws so that local councils can mount surveillance campaigns against 4 year olds to see if they are in the right catchement area for a school. Now thats the problem with people who say "if you have nothing to hide its ok" regarding cctv, id cards or any other "big brother" addition to our society. It IS and WILL be abused. Imagine thermal imaging to be used in a few years when you're under surveillance for overfilling your wheely bin, and imagine the surveillance team laughing at you having sex with your wife. Nothing to hide though right ?

St George became the special protector of the English, whose soldiers were required to wear the sign of St George.

It wasn’t until 1415 AD that St George became the patron saint of England, when English soldiers under Henry V won the battle of Agincourt. In Shakespeare's Henry V, the King famously invoked St George as England’s patron saint by crying: “Cry God for Harry, England and St George”.

I went to the shop near my office at lunchtime and they were giving away free English flags. OK, I think that they were stock left over from the World Cup last year (they had those attachments for fitting them to car windows), but I've had them flying over my desk this afternoon.

I dont know if your English you seem to be ashamed of your location but you sum up what is basically wrong with many Englishers

Their ashamed of their nationality, i hope over the next few decades this will change

Saw the English flag on the post office van, I assume the local paper will report it as 'racist'

ps why does everyone want to live here or in the USA if its so bad ?

If by "everyone" you mean those who are refugees or economic migrants from very poor countries, then the answer is simple - because although life in the US or Britain might not be perfect, it's a lot better than somewhere you fear for your life due to violent factions or insanitary drinking water. It's all relative.
