I nearly always find it the opposite...

I hate classes with a passion.

I sometimes get my Disco tracks and Northern Soul played early if no one is there

I hate classes with a passion

Now then now then, I've not got anything against classes . It's when they introduce the 'fun' element which gets me slinking off to the sides to nurse my grumpy-old-man-before-my-time bitterness...

I like to turn up about 30-45mins after it has started as it goes back to my youth when I wanted to make a entrance, and it has became a habit as now it is not about entrances because no one notices or gives a toss but I hate to come early as it is not warm up yet and to much hanging around but I am the last to leave at the end of the night

Quite true. My body for some reason was exhausted yesterday. Need rest before next Saturday. Then again I'm not young...

And this is because too many people do turn up late and so has become the norm. If only people could turn up on time then that hanging around will disappear.

Basically I just seem to be lazy these days and the fun class gets me motivated to get out the house earlier and be there early as I enjoy it.

It's a good mixer to the start of the evening and quite often there is a nice move you pick up as well. It's fun in that's it is a relaxed class where there is normally some silliness included that appeals to my childish sense of humour

If the fun class isn't on then I've found in the past the floor stays fairly well empty till around about 9:30 and if I do go up to dance there will be only 2-3 couples on the floor. Therefore everyone else sitting around will have nothing better to do than check out my dancing and I'll feel like am making an exhibition of myself which isn't good as I'm very shy

I'm shy too, so pick a partner and come and join me.
Brian used to be our example of an early starter, but he's rarely around now since he went off to New Zealand.

Can't they get up and dance or does people watching them bother them too much?

Or would they rather sit there doing nowt?

    It all puzzles me.

Re: When do you turn up for freestyles?

If a freestyle starts at 8, I'll normally be there around 9. This is very silly, as I miss out on one hour of dancing...

I used to be on time for everything - us Norwegians seem to be a bit more punctual than Brits! - but soon learned that most people tend to arrive at parties 1 hour after the official starting time. The result is that if you arrive early, there's very few people to dance with.

If there is a 'fun' class at the start of the night, I tend to arrive later to avoid it. Also, at some freestyles the music tends to improve towards the end of the evening (IMHO), so missing out on the first hour isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I do wish that more people would turn up early, though. It would be great to actually get 4 hours dancing at a freestyle night, instead of 2 1/2-3 due to everyone arriving late....

Re: When do you turn up for freestyles?

In the last decade or so of dancing, I have structured my classes in the following way

1-3 years - Beginner's class, then beginner's class as warm up for intermediate

3-6 years - Intermediate as warm-up for freestyle

6 years + - more freestyle with workshops at weekenders

Now I tend to do WCS on Weds to learn patterns, but still attend freestyles where possible

That's because the last tubes leave just after midnight. ( I never do remember the exact times)

Some folks always leave for the tube. For me it depends on what sort of night I'm having, I'll stay and get the night bus if I'm enjoying myself and have enough energy.

Me too, I try to avoid getting cold, so arrive hoping the class is over. Hammersmith and Putney have cold air blowing down onto the seats.

Re: When do you turn up for freestyles?

I would turn up late... because...

Often there is a class to start with...

Often the music is "dumbed down" in the first half of the evening to accomadate intermediate dancers.

I have constantly tried to get DJ's to play a mix throughout the evening, very rare for this to happen. the last hour is often the best hour........... due to music.

I often find the last hour of music to be the least suited to my dance ability. And that does take the edge off my dancing.

I was at a party recently where nearly all the music was slow. The second worst party I have attended, ever. I had dances with partners that usually bring out the best I can achieve, but it was flat and disappointing. I think they felt the same about my performance, but they were too polite to say.
