I believe dance comps should have purely objective criteria for categorisation of dancers, criteria that can easily be verified should the need arise. In reality, this pretty much limits it to past performance in competitions and whether or not you are a teacher/professional.
I started a thread around this area after the Champs last year.
Just a quick Follow up to this...
I've had a message that the guy that won the Intermediate in Blackpool had won the Intermediate in CEROC in 2005 and came 3rd in the Advanced at CEROC in 2006.. So Maybe Phil & Yuko can give up teaching for a month and compete in the Intermediate category too!!
As for the rest of us - why bother??
but if he's not breaking C2D's rules it's not relevant. He should be ever so slightly ridiculed at for competing in intermediate after being placed at advanced though.
What have Phil & Yuko not teaching got to do with it ? They're still teachers and can't enter intermediate due to C2D's rules
Just a quicky...
matthew Was aloud to enter the intermediate category, he had never won at this level in our comp. Next year he will move up to advanced due to natual progression.
As am independent comp we cannot look at the likes of Ceroc to see who are winners, we only look at our own comp.
He used to compete with a different partner, and as a partnership they were definitley advanced. However his new partner had only been dancing for a few months, and as a partnership they were at an intermediate level.
It is a partner dance. We judge the partnership, not the individuals.
Also you can tell from the scores that it wasn't a unanimous decision from the judges. (The judges placed each couple, and the places were translated to points. So the bigger the difference in points the more unanimous decision amongst the judges. They won by 12 points, whereas the largest winning margin was 21 points in the aerials)
Fair answers from everyone it must be said...
But I can't help thinking it just doesn't feel right!
No offence - But I'm not the only person who feels that if someone has competed and been successful at the equivalent or higher level then it doesn't feel right when they compete again at the Introductory level...
There are quite a lot of Posts on this...
Ok. So let take Ceroc Midlands 1st comp.
I was'nt there but i have been told that competitor level was not as high as ours, Britrock, ceroc Champs ect.
Do we and others make the intermediate winner who were not up against the level of competitor that they would have been ot the others comps go into the advanced?????
Is that fair???
I personally don't have a problem with an "advanced" dancer, partnered with an "intermediate" dancer, competing in the Intermediate competition. (Otherwise I'd have ended up floundering in the Advanced competition.)
I do object to advanced couple being in intermediate, but I have come to accept that it is inevitable.
To win at intermediate, you need to be good enough to compete at advanced.

On a side note... I personally think that the CEROC X category and it's equivalents in other competitions should only be for non-teachers too...
At the moment most competitions are like the Football with the same faces winning everything every year... It's always nice to see a Cardiff or the like making an appearance... Rather than man Utd/Chelsea etc. momopoly!!
- Now that made me smile... Thanks CJ!!
Partick bleedin thistle myself...
so does Nots County have a footy team now?
Never heard of them, could be they should compete in intermediate
