    Baby Ipod Orphaned

    Yo geeks and geekettes!

I bought a mini ipod (or baby ipod) of a friend, those older tiny ones, no screen or nuffink, and its worked fine for ages, but now when I connect it to the computer the computer doesn't recognize it. It still works to listen to, but I'm bored of all the stuff that I had on it and now I can't update it. I mean how many times can you listen to a lecture on 'Jango, Man or Myth? The Secrets of a Dancing Bouncy Hunter Revealed' (George Lukass) before you realize its more fun to buy the figurine.

Any tips on getting my computer to un-disown my baby ipod appreciated. It doesn't show up on itunes or in 'my computer' or anywhere else I have thought to look.

    thanks guys!

Possibly a very stupid question - but I do work in IT so....

....have you tried rebooting the iPod yet? On my iPod (which is a different model admittadly) you can restart it by holding down the middle button and the menu button at the same time.

If that doesn't work have you tried using the cable on anybody else's iPod? It could just be the cable that's busted and not the actual iPod.

depends on the model (sounds like a shuffle to me) but apple's website has a huge amount of techy help on it
My guess is as NZ Monkey says that it just needs rebooting then i would restore it to factory settings

    Or start from this page:

    Apple - Support - iPod

where you click on the picture that looks most like your iPod, click begin and follow the instructions until it works or (in my poor old iPod's case - doesn't!).

My iPod shuffle doesn't any more. Shuffle, that is. I've tried messing with all the buttons on the computer but every time I turn it on, I hear the same songs in the same order.

Any ideas? It's a bit of a bind having to auto-fill every couple of days

Yes its a shuffle - but an older model, like this: Apple - Support - iPod - iPod shuffle Troubleshooting

It doesn't have a screen or a menu or anything, just a play/pause button, forward/back, and volume. No option to reset it that I can see. I'll look through the apple site though for ideas.

Does your PC see it, but just not iTunes? (Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", find the tab with the button to get the Device Manager, and look for it there.)

Are you connecting it with a cable, or directly to your computer? Try it with a different cable, or in a different port.

Take a look inside the USB connector – does it look OK?

Do other things work OK with that cable/USB port?

Do you have the latest version of iTunes? Have you tried reinstalling it?

If none of this helps, can I suggest this link?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's not really broken.

My PC doesn't see it either.

Its connected direct to the computer, and has been tried in all the ports, all of which work with other devices.

The inside of the USB connector looks fine.

Got the latest version of itunes, and has been reinstalled.

    Still not working!

    thanks though

It sounds like it is borked.

Maybe a nice new red one would take the pain away...

In true timely fashion, having heard your plea, Apple has just released a reset utility for these little scamps.
    Just for you.
    Because they care.

    Worth a try...

If the PC can't see the iPod, then the software to reset it is unlikely to be able to do anything.

But like you say, worth a try...

Which OS are you running on the PC?

I've never had this happening with XP, but on previous Windows, when a USB device is not "seen" by the PC, I've been able to find it via Explorer, by clicking on "Folders", and there it is, listed as it should be. Maybe worth a try. Have you tried it on another PC?

Using Windows XP but isn't in Folder either. Also, can't use the reset facility because the computer can't find the ipod to reset it!

So - to clarify - you've downloaded and tried the new reset utility and it didn't work? Or you haven't tried it because it won't?

Yes tried it, but when it asks me to insert the ipod (which I do) nothing happens and I can't press the 'reset' button since it does not become activated until the program recognizes an ipod.

I've also tried restarting the ipod hardware service option thingy from the control panel, which didn't help either.

Someone in one of the apple forums said he fixed his similar problem by 'ripping out' the bottom and reconnecting some ribbon, which I may as well try if all other options fail, since I've memorised the contents now!

Yeah, it sounds like a physical problem – like a loose wire.
