Lack of competition isn't a bad thing at all for organisers and can reduce friction.
It may or may not be so good for the customer though.
In previous years the Ceroc Storm line up has been extremely impressive. I don't know if that has been related to perceived competition.
It makes complete sense for newer Ceroc weekenders, but was surprised when I downloaded the Storm 2008 schedule given Storm is Ceroc's biggest /longest running weekender - I would have expected the most experienced dancers.
Perhaps it was found that, even given the previous very impressive line ups, those dancers most interested in that sort of class line-up still weren't being sufficiently attracted/retained. Perhaps a critical mass was needed ?
Limiting taster classes may also help with gender balancing.
The taster classes are by and large more attractive to women/less attractive to men.
But if the limiting factor is the number of male tickets sold it isn't women's preferences that matter most.

Though Lucky and Ruby aren't CTA teachers though surely? Nothing wrong with bringing 'outside' teachers to big events like weekenders I would have thought. It worked extremely well with Lucky and Ruby, both their classes and attitude being a draw. So the same could be applied to WCS teachers, if Ceroc really wanted to offer WCS at their weekenders I'm sure they could find a teacher somewhere!
Personally although we found Lucky And Ruby to be teachers of a very high standard we hated the routine they did for ballroom bash so didnt do any of their other classes
It was great however to see them joining in other classes as punters and moving round in the line
It was stated on the website that this was a weekender for all levels of dancing including people who had never been to a ceroc (or mj ) night in their lives which is why they put on beginners classes
A huge crowd of very excited and exciting people were there including some of the best dancers i have ever seen in my 9 yrs of ceroc (spikey steve to name just one)
the people who did attend didnt seem like they were all in competition with each other it was a tremendous social atmosphere with some great teachers such as Franck (you can pay me later ) doing some really interesting and fun classes with the emphasis on fun
It amazes me how many people who didnt go are commenting on something they didnt experience it would be a bit like me commenting on utopia which i understand from people i know to be great but i still dont have the right to pass judgement
I want to say a huge thankyou to the organisers, the teachers and the staff at Storm for giving my wife myself and our friends a great weekend away for very little money
Thanks honey. There are always two sides to weekenders. The social side is never going to be a disappointment. Catching up with friends who you only get a chance to see at weekenders. They are worth going to for that reason alone so maybe that's where the excitement for the next one comes in.
Checked out the paps -they were great.
Passing judgement?
You never read cinema reviews then to help you make a decision about a film? Part of the point of reviews and aftermath threads is to paint a picture for the people who were not there. That was very apparent by the comments after Swish.
Just seems strange to moan and bitch about the event and then be so excited about the next one. But like i said above I guess that's due to the social aspect more than anything.
So pleased you and yours had such a great time though.
That is sort of what you said Steve, but then my post wasn't really directed at you as more the other people who were just involved in unsubstantiated speculation.
As regards scheduling, I think you'll find pretty much all beginners classes are scheduled first thing on the basis that most beginners don't stay up dancing until the early hours of the morning. On this basis they are more likely to be able to get up to do the class. I know that's a generilisation but someone has to do the early classes! In addition the scheduling, wherever possible, also tends to reflect the teacher's social habits - that's why you'll never see us scheduled before around 2pm in the afternoon...
So it is less to do with 'perceived' importance and more to do with just simple logistics.

I think some people have made their mind up before they read a review and in fact some reviewers have made up their mind before they watch a film or event. This way they look for only the parts of the film or review that confirm their preconceived ideas be them good or bad.
I also believe that two people can read the same review and end up with a totally different view of what the review is trying to state.
Such is communication.
I think there is also a case that people like to read what other people have enjoyed and finding how it can vastly differ from their own experience.
I agree people like to moan and bitch.
Steve
My immediate thought after Storm, much like some on here, was that the standard was lower than the previous two Storms, but on reflection, I'm not sure that was true.
What muddied the waters a bit was the sheer number of people on this weekender and where they danced.
Unlike Southport, all the good dancers didn't automatically end up in the Blues room. And I don't know how many attended (1600?), but it seemed more to me than the previous two Storms. Those two factors mean't the good dancers were spread out more and kinda swallowed up by sheer numbers.
The effect was, I think, to make it seem a lower standard when in fact, there were oddles of good dancers there. Certainly I never ran out of inspiring dancers to chase
The whole thing is subjective. So many different people, all wanting and expecting different things from a weekender.
I wonder how many of the 1600 actually went home having had an absolutely awful time.
It is such a shame, when personally I had a fabulous time, to come back to people slating it. Sort of burst the bubble a little .
....but remember, critics sometimes get it wrong too!
Don't be sad. Look.....
p.s. It was nice of you to introduce your self to me last night, we often chat but I had no idea you or Maxine were on the forum beforeOriginally Posted by Lory

But they didn't get it wrong. They didn't enjoy it, so they were correct in saying it wasn't a good weekend. Others, like you, had a great time so were also correct in saying it was a great weekend. It is possible for everyone to be right. Is it really necessary for people to be so defensive because others have a different experience/opinion of a weekender?
Point taken.......and I have lots of good memories which will stay with me whatever
Point taken too......but you know what it's like when you really enjoy something like a film, you rave about it and others are telling you it's absolute rubbish, it belittles your opinion somewhat! Not being defensive just defending the weekend from my POV that was all, like I said before -it is very subjective.
I agree BUT my comments were not about the people who were there said didnt enjoy it they have every right to an opinion because they experienced it.
The ones who annoy me are those who didnt go therefore didnt experience then took a what seems to be a minority's opinon and slated the weekend with no first hand knowledge about it at all

As far as dancing is concerned IMO it is all about being in the right place at the right time........
I missed Friday night, so I can't comment on that, however on Saturday night I wasn't feeling very well so didn't surface until 1am !!! Therefore I think I missed lots (especially Franck & Sheena) and felt tired about 4am so left AND missed Sheena's set and some fab dances with Franck
HOWEVER, I was in the Queen Vic Sunday afternoon (thankfully) and that was fab, it was really buzzing
Sunday night appeared to be very slow in starting, downstairs was empty, upstairs was about half full, when I left about 9:30pm, so missed the best part of the evening I never even saw Mini Mac and never got to meet martingold
Roll on VLV - gonna make sure I do the whole weekend this time !!
