    Re: L.D.A (Line Dancers Anonymous)

We call dance nights "socials". We dance, we socialise, sometimes we bring food, sometimes we have a half-time raffle, sometimes we dress up or play games (not really my bag), there might be a quiz sheet on each table, sometimes it's all for charity. Different classes, different teachers, different venues, different styles. Socials can be a bit daunting for a beginner who doesn't know many dances, but once you know some dances they are a heck of a lot of fun.

People dance in lines because it is easier not to bump into people, but sometimes the lines face each other or go in and out during the dance, or there are interesting variations of people running round mid-dance or swapping lines! Linedancing is solo dancing, mostly, but alone you are not - you dance next to your friends, you smile, you might chat (volume of music allowing). If you are sitting down then it can be interesting to watch - depending on the dancers!

There might be a floor split for some tracks (more than one dance to the same track). Partner dancing can be going on at the same time (linedance with a partner in a rotating anti-clockwise circle on the edge of the floor), and there might be MJ or WCS going on at the back.

Oh, just one more thing - there aren't enough cute straight men in linedancing, so there's a good reason for me to encourage you lot - before going to ceroc I had never seen so many straight men dancing in one place before...amazing!

While I'm not a fan of the whole line dancing concept, and I'm not big on strolls and the like, I very much see their value. Did anyone else notice how, in both series' of Strictly Dance Fever, line dancers were pretty well represented, and were present in both finals? (Danny and Jodie series one, Darren series two) - they tended to be very good, and very versatile. I don't think that was coincidence.
I think it's a great concept for people who are "between dance partners" or would rather not have a dance partner.
Although if that be the case I think I'd rather be doing funk or hip-hop or the like.
Linedancing (as far as I know - unless it's an underground movement) doesn't have a large following here in Oz.

For an underground movement in OZ, it seems to be doing well with approx 227 class nights in NSW.

83 of those classes being in the Sydney area.

Compared to 21 classes of Ceroc in the Sydney area - maybe it is Ceroc which is the underground movement?

    How amusing... first I've seen.
The most advertising/publicity I've seen of Australian line dancing (outside of the C&W festivals) was an advert on TV for a car sales yard cos it was in western sydney. From looking at the list you've provided of classes, they also seem to be in western sydney. Maybe that's the connection
Also, lots of classes does not equate to plenty of patronage. So I wouldn't use that as a sure measure of "undergroundedness" (a new word!).

A TV ad with line dancing, cool, not seen one of those with Ceroc dancers..
But as you say a lot of classes are in Western Sydney, so I guess that does not count as it is a working class area

The venues in Willougby and Chatswood, have good numbers (the posher bit of Sydney) so does that count?

If you do a number crunch and assume an average of 80 at a Ceroc night overall, you get 1680 attendees.
If you look at the lower side and assume an average of 20 at a linedance night overall, you get 1660 attendees.

When I went into Chatswood, to chat to the manager (when a Ceroc weekly venue was there), I turned up on a "linedancing" night, and the place was packed out.

I guess it depends how you look at it.

OK Cruella - have you tried it yet?

I gave it a go on Thursday night... a brief run down...

Phoned first to check it was on.

Turned up and paid my money, got taken by one of the door girls to the FRONT of the class (found out later all new people get taken to the front, so they can see the footwork and be helped more by the teacher)

Several routines were taught between 6pm and 7pm (the New Beginners slot)

I took my sons advice and made sure I mucked up at least 3 times per routine, so I flew under the radar.

Inter/advanced was 7pm to 9:30pm - so I had a couple of beers and watched, also had a good time chatting to the other beginners, and the other people in the club.

By 10:30pm - they were still going, just playing popular tracks/routines.

Man, that teacher was "fit" she did not stop dancing and intructing all that time!!!

By 10:30 pm I left, over 100 people were still on the dance floor.

It was quite fun, in a chilled out sort of way.

Not many hats and boots - more relaxed attire.

Of course when I came home, I could not help doing a brief rendition to my sons friends with a few yee hahs.... (he had 10 people round)

I got told the next day "Dad, don't EVER do that again"....

I just told him... Son, in days past, we hired a Clown for your parties, nowadays, you have me for free!

    Re: L.D.A (Line Dancers Anonymous)

I've line danced for 14 years now twice a week, and have taught it....now I leave that to Mum. (can't be doing with gold fish ahem..)The steps in WCS are a doddle with the footwork being similar. I think if you've learnt anything as such with actual structure in it, you'll find many new styles relatively easy. The only thing you'd have to then think about is timing and technique.
