Red Bananas! (Especially for Shiny... thank you for caring!)

Morrisons Customers go Bananas for Red Skins - Morrisons

And thank you to DavidY for finding the link because I'm too slow-witted to have found it myself!

I came ** close to driving 30 miles to my "local" Morrisons to buy these, luckily I saw sense and got the phone number of the store to check they stocked them beforehand...

But I really wanna try them! They're RED!!! (and they sound tasty, although it does sound like they copied the description off the back of a bottle of rose wine...)

    Thanks for the link!

Red bananas... whatever will they think of next? They do sound rather nice though, so I will keep an eye out for them and let you know whether they taste as nice as they sound.

That's what I call a lack of imagination! Just think of a banana and change it from yellow to red.

The Wikipedia entry on bananas is an interesting read. I remember a news scare story some time back, that bananas could disappear within 20 years as a commercial food. This was because the banana we all eat (called the "Cavendish" apparently) is a sterile crop and thus vulnerable to disease. Turns out this is true, and in fact happened already in the 60s to the previous favourite (the "Gros Michel" variety), which ended up commercially unviable due to Panama fungus.

Hmm... Not quite as appetising as I had imagined. Hopefully they taste better than they look.

Cool Re: Red Bananas! (Especially for Shiny... thank you for caring!)

Go to Halford's for some spray paint and you can make them any colour you like. Mine are metallic purple with a white pin-stripe

Had red-skinned bananas in India last year. Apparently in Kerala alone they grow 14 different varieties of banana - we tried 4 of them, from tiny ones as short as your thumb to the fat red ones - they were all yummy!

They actually look quite off-putting... I hope beauty is more than skin-deep in this case...

We could have orange tartan ones for the Scottish Forum and flog them at Blaze

Indeed, I've just been reading and found the following paragraph particularly enlightening as evidently I have not been peeling my bananas correctly...

"Typically, the fruit has numerous strings (called 'phloem bundles') which run between the skin and the edible portion of the banana, and which are commonly removed individually after the skin is removed."

"Phloem Bundles" I shall have to remember to remove them individually in the future!

And they come in purple, although its not nearly as funky as StokeBloke's nanas...

I also found this article really interesting and explained a few things Oral allergy syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For the purposes of scientific research you could have one a day for the next 6 days and let us know when they peak in flavour?

Put them in a paper bag - brown if possible (?) Little trick I picked up in Maui where they had appley flavoured bananas - very tasty. Tesco sell them now

Im sure you have a life

So which is cheaper to buy them from tesco or morrisons? If Asda sold them then it could be cheaper since they cut back prices often enough. Tho tesco and iceland are so much closer to me

I thought that red bananas would taste like the green and yellow ones.

I shop at both Tescos and Sainsbury's. In general I prefer Sainsburys, but Tesco has the best fruit and veg.

I love green banans, plantains and yellow bananas. Not noticed any red ones.

What happened to the 'straight' banana the scientists were supposed to be inventing, like they did with the cucumber?
