    Re: Asking For A Dance

I have been attending classes for about 8 months and only now do I feel confident to ask men up to dance. Although this is usually at a party fuelled by some dutch courage!! It is quite daunting for a woman who has never danced before to presume that someone will want to dance with her. I am a very confident person usually but the thought of being labelled a crap dancer is never far away. Give me another few months then all you men had better watch out! [I hope!]

Sometimes I go through a whole night, dancing every track but realize, that I've not asked anyone but nobody's actually asked me either! What happens is, I just see people I know, we say hello and it automatically ends up in a dance.

I do love dancing with new people but as Killingtime said, by the time I've danced with all the people I know (which is growing all the time), unless someone asks me, sometimes I don't get the chance

When i go to a venue where I don't know so many people, I always do the majority of the asking! The regulars there, are probably in the same position as I am, in the above paragraphs.

    Re: Asking For A Dance

One of my regulars stopped me between tracks as I walked off the dance floor last night and said "Have I had you yet tonight?"

We decided that he hadn't, so we had a dance instead.

I don't recall actually being pushed out of the way, but a few times, I've been within a foot of my quarry and a woman has somehow managed to swing into the gap and completely block me off.

Another time it was the last dance and 5 blokes must have been getting desperate , because 5 of them surrounded a woman dancer.

What criteria she used for picking the winner I'll never know.

Maybe we should use dance cards .

Maybe they are just sitting out again in the hope that that nice woman who asked them to dance last time will do so again if they just sit and wait .

If you do decide to continue using your "puppy dog" routine you can use Genie's avatar as a good basis for working from .

ahh, fine, you win! I will endeavour to assume that those around me don't actually hate having to dance with me.

The old fashioned ones were quite attractive, they hung from the ladies' wrists. Made from silver. I believe they are collectors items.

If you go and sit in the ladies seat while she is on the floor, this will save you having to ask, if you are shy. She will ask you.

    Re: Asking For A Dance

Non-verbal asking is great... just catch their wrist/hand on the way past and take them with you onto the floor! Although you do need to make sure you catch the right person otherwise it can get awkward...

Mind you I am afraid I've also done the following exchange at least once:
    "You dancin'?"
    "You askin'?"
    "I'm askin'"
    "Then I'm dancin'"
