Suspected that might be what you were after

    Hegel might disagree though...

I don't think someone's deluded perception of me, would upset me, if I knew it wasn't true!

I think a lot of people see someone enjoying themselves and want to be part of it but instead of getting off their backsides and stopping feeling sorry for themselves, they end up fabricating some story in their head, that puts the blame on 'others'

Well, I'm sorry to these people but if you ask me to dance, I'd be more than willing but please don't expect me to notice and come over to ask you to dance, if you sit there with a miserable face, when there's other people there, that I know I'm guaranteed to have fun with!

    Anywhere close?
Well, it was an American movie, so you're closer than Caro.

I don't think that soley makes you a hotshot, although through your actions you could be mistaken for one. You have to have the conceated attitude as well; refusing dances and having your attention anywhere but on your partner (including on yourself) is a good way to be branded a true hotshot

    ...In my opinion of course

My point was, there's no "truth" in this situation - there's just two different points of view. So you can say (for example) "I'm not a hotshot" and someone else can say "Yes, you are" - and you'd both be "right", because you're both simply expressing your subjective impressions of an objective event.

    It's a relativity thing.

Possibly, but it's pretty common behaviour - certainly we've discussed it enough. Lots of people see a group and form impressions. That's a fact. If you're in such a group, then you should be aware that it will generate that impression, amongst some people outside of that group.

I don't see this as a "Your fault / their fault" argument - it's no-one's fault, it's just the way people behave. There's no point in getting worked up about it, from either side of the argument.

(I, of course, have my own invisible group, they follow me around everywhere, so I automatically generate bad feelings in everyone I meet )

Re: Do you worry if you think you have been called a hotshot?

I don't worry if I've been called a hotshot, I'd quite like to be thought of as having impressive skill and daring etc. I think my dance style is one which gives the impression of supreme confidence (it's all about acting), so quite possibly someone along the line has thought 'hotshot'...

But then I dance with anyone who asks, beginner or not. I do sometimes think that some people are 'scared' off asking me to dance, which I do worry about. But then, you can never get inside the mind of others, so you'll never know.

Cool Re: Do you worry if you think you have been called a hotshot?

I love the whole 'rise above it' ethos that's being bandied about. However I would be upset if I was viewed as a hotshot. I try to make sure that where ever I go I pay forward into the dance pool. Encourage and dance with the new comers (and hopefully not put them off!).

Let me explain why I would be deeply offended. When I started dancing I went to different venues with friends. There were a few times when one of the group, with years of dancing experience, said to me "see her.... avoid asking her, she's a hotshot and she'll refuse you". Being new and having an even more fragile ego than I have now, I foolishly took this advice. In doing so I missed dancing with some wonderful dancers for a long period of time.

I have since danced with these ladies and found them to be quite charming people, and delightful to dance with.

THAT is my issue with this type of label being bandied about.... THAT is why I get defensive if I believe that this sort of title is being attributed to me. I am not unapproachable and as I said previously I do try to dance with 'randoms' and 'noobs' where ever I go dancing.

If you want to say to your friends, "That's Stokie, he has impressive skill and daring on the dance floor. You must ask him for a dance!" Please feel free. However, please don't bundle that thought in the Hotshot wrapper, as there is a fair chance your praise will be grossly misinterpreted

    Thank you.

I think the lesson here is, don't rely on other peoples opinions! They may be warped!

No, probably not. It depends why I have been called a hotshot, and whether or not it based on a mistaken impression or not.

    I don't like the forum's glossary definition – I think it's more likely you'll find a hotshot "advanced" dancer, than one that's "mid-intermediate".

I don't know any hotshots. (Not even Caro. )

    Well, now you tell me...

But I disagree - IMO most hotshots are not advanced dancers.

That's not to say that advanced dancers can't be hotshots - but it does seem to me that most hotshots are in the "think they're better than they are" category. And that type of dancer seems to be predominantly in the bloody-intermediate camp.

Although, again, I suspect that hotshottiness is largely a question of relative perception.
