    Deflation

You know that feeling you get when people trot out those platitudes that drive you nuts? That feeling that if only you knew the right phrase, you could make the statement seem the pompous drivel that it really is?

You know, like Better to light a candle than curse the darkness? Where you think: If I had a *ucking candle and matches I wouldn't be in the dark to start off with, would I

So I thought I would share with you an absolute gem from Jeremy Hardy from last week's Newsquiz, which I am currently listening to.

"I think it's important to live each day as if it is your last," he stated, "so I generally lie in bed, drifting in and out of consciousness..."

Humour's a personal thing, I know, but that was a coffee out-through-the-nostrils moment for me...

A personal favourite is, "it's always in the last place you look." Which I've started using, but only in the ironic sense with an internal aside of, "unless you're REALLY stupid and keep looking after you found it."

I find platitudes particularly annoying. To me, it substitutes a basically automatic response for anything resembling thought or meaning. This is most likely an unfair attribution to most other people, so I tend to keep it to myself (the notable exception being when someone tries to cheer me up with some meaningless comment ... on that, I bite.).

    How about this one ?

If inflation and deflation happen at the same time would it produce a vacuum?

Saw thread title and my learned friend and thought big bang round 2

    Another coffee snorting moment...

Some local trade directory came through the letterbox.

For added colour there's a little 'funny things kids say' page.

One of the question is 'How can a stranger tell if two people are married?'

    An 8 year old's answer:

"He would have to guess, based on whether they are yelling at the same kids."

He'll be alright though. A few well chosen platitudes should make up for his rotten childhood.

Hmmm. Not quite sure what you're sayng here - BTW this is my token 'light hearted thread', so keep the heavy socio-political stuff for my heavy-duty threads, if you please!

BTW this was a light hearted post (clue was in the smilie) joining in with the dig at platitudes. Perhaps you need more practice at light hearted.

I don't use smillies very often, but I'm disappointed that you didn't see the self-deprecation in my post.

oh,oh can we change this thread into a really heavy discussion about how we just don't get each others sense of humour, so that we can then roll out such platitudes as 'each to their own...' etc. Can we? Can we???

ABSOLUTELY no apologies necessary!! Misunderstandings happen when people are talking face to face, never mind when there's only text to look at.

What I would like is a 'tongue-in-cheek' smiley; or a 'deadpan' one. (I often use the 'what' smiley as a substitute for 'deadpan'.)
