Actually, I didn't really get much out of Mick's classes, the ones I attended weren't really right for me. But he's certainly got a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and he knows how to build up a crowd - and, presumably he's also ambitious.
So yes, there are parallel between him and Simon, I guess - although I think Simon's better at working the room, from what I've seen.
I guess it's inevitable that Ceroc will lose some teachers this way.
Thought I should post to clear this up. Much as I dislike putting a view across one way or the other, the first that we new of this was a text from Mick last night around 10.30 saying he'd resigned. This was after the announcement he made at the venue.
Personally I think that the way that they have decided to do this is appalling - total lack of any respect or decency. Announcing that you are leaving and starting up on your own before you've even told anybody you work for ????? Not sure about anybody else but I personally have some integrity which wouldn't allow me to do that.
I'm surprised at your comment Onkar about jumping ship ... you're not employed by CerocMetro so you have absolutely no idea about the relationship between Adam and his paid staff - Mick and Jon were both very well paid - well above the standard rates - for their services and supposed commitment. Adam is extremely trusting with people which is why neither of them is tied to any contract whatsoever.
For your info - Adam has worked with Jon for 10 years, when he was banned from DJing for Ceroc, Adam put his neck with Ceroc Head Office many times. When Mick was in the doldrums and not teaching anywhere, Adam gave him the opportunity.
For the records and contrary to other information, Tezi was responsible for finding the St Albans venue and it was Adam who proposed the 3 class format (which Mick did not want to do) as he has been using it very successfully in New Zealand for some years.
There are many reasons why st albans works, dj and music are a part of that. The rest of the crew is staying on as they enjoy what is in place. They'll be a good replacement teacher and dj and the venue will move on.
I should point out that the venue we are referring to is The Marlborough School in Watling Street. There is no other ST Albans venue - it was previously at the Town Hall, which was a smaller venue and was being killed by the parking restrictions.

Blimey, that's well-dodgy.
If it's any consolation, the things I like about the place are because it's a good venue; good floor, good size, and so on. So I won't be coming any less; may even come more, in fact.
Hmmm, that may not be much of a consolation...
Dare I ask, who's the DJ tonight?
Stalker
Actually fom what I understand Mick hasn't been a Ceroc teacher for some years now. He was allowed to teach at St Albans and JB was allowed to DJ there even though they both work for independents as a favour to Adam, who as Robin says, put his neck on the block for them a number of times.
Who knows what really went on, but having spoken to Mick at the RB's NYE do I have feeling it's got more to do with ego than anything else...
After some reflection, I think this a VERY positive thing:
The bottom line is that St. Albans & environs continues to be a focal point for high quality social modern jive.
- for the dancers it give us another option for Monday night (and what an option!)
- if St. Albans on Thursday reduces below the 200 mark then from my perspective - that's good: a bit more space on the dance floor would be fine!
- the team of Mick, Jo and Jon remain intact. They can develop perhaps with more freedom - and competition is good
- From Adam's perspective - maybe (from what was said) he reduces his costs and still maintains a fantastic business
- more opportunities for other teachers/DJs
Peace, love and understanding to all
do you believe that its down to the dj and teacher that the class is that big?
I agree it could be so at for some places although at all the cerocmetro venues they are filled to capacity with a variety of dancer and always have been long before mick wenger came on the scene
I personally think this wont be much of a problem for cerocmetro as it gives adam a chance to build on what is already a successful venue
"What makes a successful venue?" is a perennial question.
I think the consensus is that it's a number of factors, including the location, the venue (floor etc.), and that thing, "atmosphere".
Atmosphere is affected by the teachers and the music, certainly. For example, Berko wouldn't be sublime absent Marc and Ian on the decks - but it'd still be pretty good, simply from the setup.
Some venues succeed (eg. St. Albans), some fail (Shenley was, I'm sorry to say, pretty rubbish), and some just bumble along.
Yes, St. Albans has been successful, but as I recall, Jon B was DJ-ing, and Mick was teaching, at the previous incarnation of St. Albans, which was not successful. So based on that, I'm inclined to think that the main success has been because of the venue and location, rather than any particular teachers, demos or DJs.
Now if they'd taken over St Albans as a failing venture, and turned it round, then It'd be pretty clear that the staff was the main reason. But they didn't.
