We're going to a salsa venue tomorrow night... not much good at salsa so it will probably be a little salsa, some basic cha cha, and if the music works, some WCS and MJ!
I went to the Theatre in MK to see Hobson choice for my birthday
awwwww
Thats everywhere else ?
Is the capacity limit higher now than it used to be Rocky? I enjoyed Friday as I usually do at Utopia but it was difficult at times and strangely so.
I didn't think it was that hot but I sweated buckets. I can't remember the last time I needed to change my shirt at a normal event but my first one was wringing pretty quickly on Friday - apologies to any ladies who had to dance with me in that state (and be thankful I wasn't practicing my head flicks )
Walking aroud the venue it didn't feel overcrowded but the theme of the evening was very definitely one of defensive dancing. Ok, if I choose to dance WCS in a mixed environment such as this then I may be exacerbating the problem but I noticed it when dancing MJ too. I tried a number of areas of the floor and experienced the same feeling everywhere. Not only does it put an extra responsibility in the mind of the leader but there are some follows who get so distratcted by the possibility of collision that their attention goes away from their following and into self-preservation and the dance suffers a great deal as a result. How did other people find the floorcraft and available space?
It was good to see so many faces I didn't recognise - lots of new people trying Utopia - yet the atmosphere remain as convivial as always. And despite the issues I experienced above I had a handful of cracking dances
Twyford Saturday was quieter than usual but I still had a good time - more floorspace to play with than Utopia which was nice though a bit ice rink in patches as Almost an Angel will attest
I was trodden on 4 times! This normally never happens at a Utopia night, which is part of the reason I usually have a nice relaxed evening there. There were also a few comments on how it seemed that there were a lot of ladies sitting out, which also doesn't make sense, as it was sold out, so should have been perfectly gender balanced. (Cue Xfiles music)
Personally, it wasn't one of my favourite Utopia nights. It was still far better than a lot of freestyles I've attended but not up to my usual Utopian experience. I found the music very samey and it seemed like there weren't as many new gems as usual.
Can we please have a Utopia where 'Superstition' and 'The same love that made me laugh' (and a few others) aren't played........although you can carry on over playing 'Somebody elses guy'
Saying that though, I still had some fantastic dances, it was just a bit of a rollercoaster night for me, with lots of ups and downs.
It was always going to be a tough night, as it was the first major freestyle following an awesome Southport weekender, a very hard act to follow IMO.
I had a good time at Utopia with some lovely dances, but I too was trodden on a couple of times and kicked in the ankle once (which really hurt ), plus I led quite a few dances and was really having to concentrate hard to stop my followers being bashed. It's hard to know what can be done about this in the future though...
Many of the men (especially, but not exclusively) were very hot and sweaty. I know that Val went to check on the air conditioning situation as soon as it was mentioned to her that it was very warm in the venue, so full respect to her, but it did make dancing with some people pretty nasty; I was put in the uncomfortable position of having to mention it to one guy whom I don't know very well, I hope he won't have been offended and will dance with me again as he's a good dancer.
I too found the music a bit of a mixed bag (and I kow you can't please all of the people all the time) but my special request would be - please can you avoid those two tracks that have the very squeeky harmonica in them? They are horrible to listen to and IMO uninspiring to dance to. Some of the other tracks, however, were fab and I wish I could remember the name of the track I danced with Jamie too because it was brilliant.
Having said all of that I enjoyed the evening overall, Dave, Val and Vince certainly give the event their all, and I will be booking for the next one .
You know something, Friday was the first time it occurred to me that a room where its 50/50 WCS and MJ, doesn't really work that well.
It was difficult to find 'a space' that worked well for either but having said that.. it was still a fabulous night and the perfect way to get through the post weekender blues!
I noticed that tooIt was good to see so many faces I didn't recognise - lots of new people trying Utopia- yet the atmosphere remain as convivial as always. And despite the issues I experienced above I had a handful of cracking dances
Hmm, someone said that to me too, although, I have to say, I didn't notice that
Thankfully, I had a fantastic time! and really enjoyed the new faces there!Personally, it wasn't one of my favourite Utopia nights.

The capacity limit is the same as its always been Rob: the numbers on the floor do vary based on who's in and who's socialising. We had a couple of nights early on last year that were 20 people over our self imposed limit and yet the floor felt quieter - so go figure...
We did have a lot of new faces, which is great, but maybe they were less experienced, so the floor craft just needs tweaking. Having said that I danced pretty much solidly from 10-11.30pm which is the busiest time on the floor and I always managed to find space.
As for the temp: it's an odd one this. When we go in to set up we turn the heating off and put the air con on full blast. By 8pm it is really quite cold in the room and that's without the fans on. Once the class ends and the dancing kicks off, the fans are on, the air cons on but it still does get hot. I think the air con needs servicing and we have talked to the venue a couple of times about this. In the interim, however, we're looking into getting some more fans to help even the temp out.
