    Re: Southport - the aftermath

My best Southport so far! . Had amazing dances on all three evenings, including my best one to date on sat in the main hall (much to my surprise).

Thought the music was great all weekend and managed to get time in the blues room, main hall and latin quarter. Had fab chalet-mates and couldn't really ask for much more .

Only real disappointments for me were the tango lesson (teacher's didn't seem to know how to cope with so many in the lesson) and the dips and drops (everyone is aching just a little last thing on Sunday afternoon).

Booked for June and should really do so for September.

Thanks to Jon and Wes for organising a fantastic event time and again!

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

My 10th Southport and the best yet!! I danced sooo much, I seemed to hardly ever sit down and everywhere I looked there were lots and lots of lovely partners and great music. Best weekender ever.

And I'm not into the 'who can stay up the latest' sort of thing - but this morning the music and the mix of people was just too good to drag myself away and danced right through from 10pm to 9am. And a few more while waiting for breakfast!

So on that note, and that I'm extremely tired, will leave the rest til later...

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

OK, I've had some sleep and think I should write this review before I forget anything

    The Good

Fantastic chalet mates - even though both were intruders... I don't think I've laughed so much for AGES! My sides still hurt

Plenty of great dances - I seriously can't think of any bad dances all weekend. Special thanks to a few - Killingtime (of course), Passion Harem (for some amazing tango), PretzelMeister (how trusting was I in that drop ) and pmjd (you know why ). There were of course many other fantastic dances with most of my favourite leaders - I was definitely spoilt for choice

Actually spending some time in the main room on Sunday evening until a certain event (details to follow) - I'm actually tempted to do that more often

Extra space in the blues room - I hope it's there for June

Floor was the right combination of grip and speed for me

    Perfect travel companions

    The Bad

I actually don't have bad things to say (I'm not going to go into the Benji/Heidi debate here)

John/Wes certainly know how to run a fantastic event

    The Ugly

Getting elbowed in the face on Sunday evening in the main room - Ow (thanks to all those who danced with me afterwards and were lovely and gentle )

    The downright hilarious

Line dance class Sunday evening - KT, your fairy dancing will go down in history

    Wonderwoman's exact milk requirements

Watching Caz & Jamie's Titanic rendition

The video that will never make it to the public eye

Certainly my best Southport yet merely for the socialising as much as the dancing. It truly is one of a kind.

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

    Had a groovy time.

Nothing too serious, nothing too difficult, just groovy.

Best thing this weekend was seeing Lory the Friday before when she said "Electric Blanket!!!" - Boy what a bl00dy brilliant move. Having said that once up to temp the chalet seemed warm enough even though we were in a cattle class unit without carpet.

Some lovely dances and some interesting classes.

B & H were I agree up their own ones and next time they try and use humour they should probably check out any politically incorrect sayings they plan on using during their classes. The rather awkward silence following the spastic quip was well awkward. Capiche?

    Victor - nuff said

Nigel n Nina - nuff said too!

Twas a shame about Victor and Flavia

Oh and what is it with some people spilling drinks on a dance floor and just leaving it there? Where is the thought for the fellow dancer there?

    And of course

    All the best Jamie
    and take care Caz!

    xxx

    Wikipedia defines 'capiche' like this:
Interjection (US, with a menacing connotation): Understand?

    Just thought I'd mention it.

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

    OK here's mine.

    Good
    • Having extra dance floor in the Blues Room. The marquee from last Feb would probably have been impossible/very tricky to put up in the winds on Friday, and having everything inside made it easier to control the temperature - temperature was a bit out 1st thing on Friday but once it settled down, it was much more stable than last Feb which was either boiling or freezing.
    • Lots of good dances, some absolutely fab ones
    • Some of the music in the main room was top-notch - like Cruella I had some good dances there. The main room is (IMO) under-rated and looked down on as the "boing boing" music. And admittedly sometimes it was fairly standard music. But at other times you can have a brilliant time, music with breaks and all the other stuff you get in other rooms, but with space to dance.
    • Heidi & Benji's 1st cabaret slot was, for my money, the better one of their two. I don't know what the music was - but it seemed to be a classical piece of piano music, with lots of light and shade, and variations in tempo (which is very rare in the music we dance to). As a lead and follow cabaret I thought it was brilliant. It's a shame it won't be on the DVD - glad I was there to watch it.
    • The tango cabaret which followed it was good too - the music for that started very similarly with solo piano.
    • The weather was much better than I'd expected from the doom-laden forecasts.

    Bad
    • Blues Room volume levels were way too loud. The extra dance floor was too quiet at the start of Friday but someone clearly over-compensated so it was deafening for most of the rest of the weekend.
    • When the Dance Den was dedicated to WCS, in the Blues Room it was still mainly WCS music. Why? I like some WCS music but I like to have a choice. When there's a dedicated WCS room going it seemed the perfect time to play more varied stuff in the Blues Room.
    • Losing my mojo on Sunday night. I spent most of the night wandering round looking for it and not actually doing much dancing.
    • The "Forumites gathering" on Friday night seems to mean nothing nowadays. Not really Jive Addiction's fault - it's just that we forumites need to to the organising...

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

    Good
    * Another fantastic Southport weekend - the overall impression it leaves you buzzing right through the Monday tiredness
    * Some excellent dances - no names, no pack drill - is a shame that Jamie's not likely to be around for a while though
    * Proving that WCS and smiling can co-exist
    * Never feeling that anywhere was too crowded (though I did go back to the chalet for the post-cabaret to 2 am period on the Sat night)
    * Traditional English breakfast providing a much needed boost after dancing through til 9 on the Sunday morning
    * Weather ended up much more reasonable than the forecasts suggested
    * Generally a good temperature balance inside the venues (tho Dance Den was v hot at its peak on Sat)
    * The additional flooring in the Blues Room worked really well IMO
    * Afternoon dancing had a quality of its own, as always.
    * So many people dancing WCS socially. The dance den was heaving at points and that can only be good for the growth of the scene. So many of our gallic swinging friends over too.
    * Paul Warden delivering everything in his social dancing that people complained that Benji lacked.
    * Benji and Heidi's cabaret dances - incredible.

    Bad
    * Benji and Heidi didn't seem to make that good an impression. I watched a couple of their classes but wasn't left with a strong verdict either positive or negative from that. Clearly many people have certain expectations of Southport headline teachers and B&H didn't live up to that
    * Knocking back a couple of people on Sun night (for valid reasons) and not managing to get back to them before tiredness got the better of me.
    * Missing a couple of people whom I hoped to catch a dance with. Maybe next time.
    * A bizarre dance with someone who apparently teaches for a certain jive organisation. I'd be in no hurry to get to their classes
    * Private with Paul Warden. Not intrinsically bad but it made me acutely aware of the areas of my dancing that are painfully lacking Still, there's no point paying good money just to get smoke blown up your ars.....
    * Lack of Sunday daytime sleep meaning I was just too tired to make it to the end on the Sunday night and..
    * Feeling rough on Friday night/Sat morning leading me to stay in bed til 4 oc clock and miss some great music from Rich Van Dyke in the afternoon.

Did you think people who didn't 'get' the reference would lack the ability to look it up themselves if they wished to?

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

Fantastic weekend thanks to all the lovely men and women who danced with me, you all know who you are and you all make me feel a million dollars on that dance floor. Great to get together with Snow White and the gang. Thank you to Lemon Cake for your lemon cake et al. Thank you to Barnpot who always has the magic life savers at hand in the wee small hours in the blues room, that is coffee and chocolate , you are a Roman Legionary fighting against exhaustion and pain.

I now have the right to say that I was dropped by CJ, CJ your sets were just unmissable, I danced on my own when I couldn't get anyone to join me , I just had to move to that fabulous music. Really brought the rock chic out of me . I have to mention the track by Lynrd Skynrd , 'Free Bird' which I danced the guitar section to with Mr Cool , one of the most amazing experiences of the weekend and we got an applause ha ha.

Great music from all the DJs thank you chaps and chapesses. Blueshoes as always you find beautiful tracks to dance rhumba, cha cha and dance the blues to. Ta muchley to Sugarfoot who despite feeling not so good braved some tango dances with me, that was much appreciated Ian.

I think the pluses far outweigh the minuses. It was winter, so expected it to be cold, wrapped up warm, spent a bit more than usual on the lecky so what, face bovvered it was worth it.

Irish Dancing WOW now that took me back a few years and more, really enjoyed the wee bit of the Siege of Ennis that we were shown always enjoyed that as a child and recall the fun when we all get tangled up. Maybe we could have more ceili dancing??

Good luck Jamie you will be the star that you are babe and the quintessential Peter Pan.

Nice to meet some forumites I hadn't met before and last but not least thank you John and Wes for hosting a great event. See you in June.

Oops, what's a comma between friends, ( I blame sleep deprivation). Besides, I understand Fletch and could translate most of her posts. You'll need to find someone else for Stewart38's though! Stewartian is way beyond my comprehension!

why ho why when i'm giving it my 'all' around my handbag do people think I need a partner to dance with, when there are girls standing on the edge of the floor 'gigging' about looking like they wan't to dance. most accept a no, and I try and find them after, one pearson stuck the fingers up to me on Sunday night, and one man handled me, to the point of unexcepterbility (you know who you are) I think he also can understand 'Fletch' speak

the look on Cruella's face when I sent the bloke her way, Di if you had have been dancing around your handbag you could have refused revenge is a dish best served cold, are you sure you wan't to take me on. hehe! I have load of loverly men I can send your way

and Just rememberd my dance with CJ and Raf good job Gerry wasn't watching, I was nearly embarassed

    I love to freestyle.

I had such a fabulous time at Southport and all I did in my waking hours was freestyle.

Thanks to J&W for providing the event and all the amazing DJs, you know who you are,, who provided the high quality and huge variety of music for all of us to express ourselves to.

I danced with so many people many of whom I'd not danced with before it was magic.

I only wish I could invent the drugs that would allow me to remain dancing all weekend and not have to stop for sleep and food etc.

I cannot comment on any of the classes as I didn't venture near one.

    Caberet performances were stunning.

well done to the winners of the themed fancy dress....WE WILL BE BACK!!!!

The weather robbed the venue of 2 marquees that blew down last wednesday night but the alternative flooring in the blues room was a stroke of genius in replacement.

Fabulous event, great venue, amazing accumulation of the country's top dancers who in general were all out dancing for pure pleasure. Isn't that what its all about?

    Dance and let live..

Bring on the next one whenever it is.......

    Re: Southport - the aftermath

All as expected I guess, does as it says on the tin

Walked into a lovely heated apartment on arrival cira 9pm on Friday which was very nice as it was freezing outside

Same DJ did his fades and cut record in half in main ballroom same DJ did the heavy stuff in the blues/swing room. No surprises really. Overall thought music/heat/noise etc was all fine

I guess the WCS is very popular but I felt disappointed for my partner, for example on Saturday the only jive class you could attend was at 10am and they were two of them that clashed. What’s wrong putting 2/3 hrs beginners improvers in the den sat and sun. I dance with a number of ‘beginners’.

Some will argue beginner’s/ new people shouldn’t come to a weekender but I still feel if it’s a ‘jive weekender’ a bit more effort re jive lessons should be made. I don’t know when WCS will stand on its own two feet, I guess a WCS weekender would get 300/400 at the moment so I guess it will ride on the back of jive for a while.

Re the cake wasn’t sure if it was ‘lemon cake’ who told me about it but all very nice

Thought the blebs cabaret routine was great

Also for the foumite who tried to put his tongue down my gf throat not funny not asked for and bang out of order. Thankfully people like that are still rare in the dance world.

    Overall a great weekender

    Ps big thanks to WB
pps did anyone spot Zebra women dancing at least 7 mins to one bouncy tune in the main ball room

As a rave veteran I've often wondered whether people on weekenders use the same methods for staying awake that other people on dance weekenders use. That said, I didn't see anyone at Southport gurning, chewing gum incessantly or with smartie eyes, so perhaps the same culture doesn't exist.

Highlights - not really leaving the blues room all weekend, fantastic music and loved the extra floor space in the blues room. As always, meeting great new people made southport. Thanks to Paul and Wuzzle for great dances and the offer of a june ticket, Carl for taking the **** out of the stomp move, Mark and Mark for the lovely blues dances and all the lovely manchester people for dancing with me when i was too tired to dance properly with a stranger.

Glad to say there were no disapointments, other than single female tickets going before i could get one . Cant wait to see you all in June, Catx
