Hmm. It's not really English, either.
I had no idea where the beds were from. It's more of a concern that a yorkshire company was naming them than that Woollies were selling them. Good grief.
Actually, I don't believe this "No-one here knew who Lolita was" excuse, it's so patently unbelievable. I'm sure the PR person was genuinely that clueless - I'm quite happy to believe most PR people are very dumb. But I reckon most other people at Woolworths spotted it, but just kept their head down, and didn't mention it.
Oh, well I'm inclined to agree with you there. It's one of those names, like - um - Victor Meldrew, that is in the national pantheon. Very difficult to believe anyone isn't vaguely aware of the connotations.

In fact, I reckon Playboy-branded stuff is far less damaging than things like Bratz.

Now, OK, I know you can get all over-reactive about this sort of thing, but there's a legitimate concern about the sort of marketing and images young girls are exposed to
Huh, this is boring - I'm agreeing with you again.

It's one thing to be fully aware that teenagers are fumbling around with each other and even having sex before the age of consent, and actually not to mind; but it's another to permit a situation in which young teenage or younger girls are feeling pressure to be 'sexy'.

It's the Spice Girls and then Britney Spears that are partly responsible for this; I'm reasonably sure that in the old days a management team who realised their talent's primary market demographic was 8 to 12 year old girls would not have allowed them to do concerts, promotional appearances, videos etc dressed like (the conventional image of...) street whores.

Then you have the red-tops who routined publish pictures of young female celebrities' underwear, in order to get which pictures the paps (a deliciously insulting abbreviation, I think) hold their cameras in between the celebs' knees pointing upward as they walk along (a practise that richly deserves the description 'pathetic' - anyone who chooses to make a living doing that deserves to be punched by every self-respecting male) teenage girls on page 3 - my god! It's the decline and fall of western society!

With all the connotations I wonder if it's an issue that the film and book are less well-known now.

From what people have said in this thread, the word is censored in some company's search engines, Beo felt uncomfortable about having the DVD in his collection. When did the film last get shown on terrestrial telly, I wonder?

With all this censorship (and self-censorship) going on, maybe some folk (esepcially the younger generation perhaps) genuinely haven't heard of it.

one is filthy disgusting child corrupting smut.. and the other is a tasteful gentleman's magazine founded by Hugh Hefner.

My nieces are all into Bratz and I was shocked at the stuff they were pushing on them .. as stated above, mini skirts, fishnets etc and it's all about 4 girls who publish a school fashion magazine. I think in the UK the slogan is "Girls with a passion for fashion" but the clothes etc are nor what I would classify as suitable for the age ranges of children playing with them.

I've seen a marked increase in the amount of "inappropriate" clothing being worn by children. Children grow up far too fast these days.

The Jeremy Irons version was shown at some time in the last year, or thereabouts.

You know, when you catch yourself saying things like that, you know you are on the downward slope, my man.
