    Defining Moments

Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy: You know why I still hit that shot?
Romeo Posar: Yeah, because it's the only way you could beat Dave Simms.
    Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy: No.
Romeo Posar: 'Cause it was that look in your face...
Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy: I hit it again because that shot was a defining moment, and when a defining moment comes along, you define the moment... or the moment defines you.
As an alternative to rating your dancing out of 10, what are the defining moments you've acheived in Ceroc / MJ?

eg Getting through an entire dance without saying "Sorry"
Asking the demo / teacher for a dance
Getting through an entire dance without repeating a move
    Winning a Comp

I'm also interested in how different people's moments vary, rather than "To be a good dancer you must have done a, b and c".

    Re: Defining Moments

For me, I think it has to be getting dancing shoes. My style changed completely, I had loads more confidence, and I really started to have fun dancing. Also, I think they helped me do a decent double manspin for the first time.

I still feel a bit of a nit changing shoes, you can almost feel people think, 'who does he think he is, Fred Astaire?', but maybe it helps me to become another character, one who can dance.

    A few spring to mind:
    • Using salsa to smooth out my MJ (about 8-10 years ago)
    • Importing cross-body leads from salsa to MJ (about 5 years ago).
    • Attempting to forget moves (about 3-5 years ago)
    • Learning to walk forward more than 1 step with confidence (about 2 years ago, after seeing tiger pull it off on his birthday dance )
    • Planeo-ing myself with walkarounds (ongoing)

    Re: Defining Moments

I’ve spent a very pleasant afternoon reminiscing - a good way to end the year . Thanks to everyone who’s made these possible, be it through teaching, dancing with me, answering questions etc.

    In roughly chronological order
    • Getting through a dance without saying "Sorry"
    • Dancing in silence
    • Having a lady jump up and down clapping her hands at the end of a dance going “Again! Again!”
    • Applause from the teachers
    • Demoing an Int Workshop
    • Asking a lady in tears to dance – by half way through she was smiling – by the end she was laughing.
    • Greenwich Ball
    • Making a taxi dancer smile in the beginners class
    • Making it through the night without any collisions
    • Having a lady swear at my dancing (in a good way)
    • Play
    • Blues
    • Sabotaged / hijacked
    • Asked for a second dance
    • Asked for the last dance
    • “Excellent” from someone who’s opinion I really value
    • Asked to enter a comp
    • Figuring out how to lead always maintaining some form of contact
    • Slinkys
    • Jango
    • T-Jive
    • Had a crowd gather to watch and then applause
    • Moveless Ceroc
    • Half-assed Jango
    • Dancing with my eyes closed
    • Dancing with her eyes closed
    • Dancing with both our eyes closed
    • Dancing without touching
    • Leading moveless Double Trouble on someone recovering from major surgery
    • Being evil
    • Asked for a second dance by someone who’d (rather wisely) been politely avoiding me for ages while I figured out how the heck to lead her.
    • Applause for a Jango dance
    • Leading a reverse underground gancho sacada on three different ceroc beginners and a stray dog and having it work half the time
    • Moveless Jango

    Re: Defining Moments

    Defining moments (roughly chronological):

    - Asking for a dance once a night with an ex-ballroom cerocer (EBC) who would treat the track like a lesson.
    - Trying the lead part in Ceroc lessons, but getting fed up with most women seemingly assuming I was gay & about to chat them up.
    - Getting bored with move monsters (although didn't know that's what they were called until I joined the forum).
    - Franco's weekenders & doing nearly all the lessons in everything.
    - Trying lindy & it not quite doing everything I wanted it to.
    - Rediscovering MJ at Hipsters.
    - Jango
    - Joining the forum.
    - Following DavidB's 'air' lead.
    - Being told to 'feel' rather than 'think' as a follow.
    - The civility of jango tea dances: dancing & cake!
    - Asking the EBC (above) for a dance after many years & finding him a dull dancer (but at least he didn't try to teach me anything).
    - Southport weekender blues room (& hardly doing any of the lessons).
    - Thinking I was bored with MJ.
    - Trying tango in a few venues but not finding a 'home' one.
    - Finding a 'home' tango venue.
    - Greenwich last week: sadly confirming I don't enjoy MJ any more, but do like blues ... er, and tango. WCS will have to wait.

    Re: Defining Moments

    My defining moments:
    • Actually getting on a dance floor for the first time ever in my life at my first MJ class.
    • Dancing MJ at my wedding reception 7 months later and thinking, "I can actually do this!"
    • Moving up to intermediates and thinking, "I can actually do this!"
    • Joining this forum (and a few others).
    • Being able to dance without thinking about moves.
    • Beginning to understand musicality.
    • Competing in a local competition and not embarrassing myself.
    • Competing in a local competition and coming second.
    • Being asked for advice by other dancers.
    • Being asked to be a taxi dancer.

    I'm intrigued by this one.

Does it work? How do you get all that stuff out of your muscle memory? Also what do you do instead of moves?

People here say that they don't use moves but they do. They just don't always have readily available names.

    Re: Defining Moments

    I have quite a few:
    • Turning up at a MJ night
    • Becoming the best dancer at my venue
    • Going on my first weekender
    • Going on my second weekender (much better this time around)
    • Learning the art of blues dancing after said weekender
    • Becoming a teacher for my local MJ venues
    • Meeting Alex Faulkner (and hating his guts for being so good)
    • Storm 2006
    • Becoming a teacher for Ceroc
    • Meeting Lucky & Ruby

Yes - more so since I started Tango, which is non-move-based.

I'll admit that I still use my own moves for parts of some dances - and I'll happily use moves for Ceroc-stylee dances. But the "moves" I use for blues-tango dancing are mostly just steps - forwards, back, pivot, lunge, rotate, and so on. I wouldn't class those as moves.

Well mine too - but in a way that's bad at forgetting stuff I want to forget, especially if it's heavily ingrained.

Come to think of it I'm still working on this one.

Someone I danced with at the weekend did complement me on my singing along to the music, though.

Of course I should have said she complimented rather than complemented me.

    But she was being nice.
