If 10 is the best of the best on the MJ scene, and 0 is a total newbie like Gus suggested, I'll rate my MJ as a 5, maybe 6 on a good day. There's so much I need to improve on!
If I was to rate my WCS, I'd say about 2-3.
Interesting. Like others, I tried to calibrate what 0 and 10 meant. I took 0 as being the standard you'd expect form a 1=2 week newbie, and 10 to be the dancers who are the best of the best, i.e. Viktor, Nigel etc when they were on top form. From there I guess I have the 'usual' winners of the Main Champs (C2D, Ceroc London) at about 9 (sometimes depending on 'how good a year' it was). When I was dancing at Jango and competing at the top level I would have put myslef in the 7/8 mark ... but sadly thats now ancient history ... hence my significantly lower self-assessment as a shuffle of toward the dancing equivalent of slippers, warm glass of milk and dozing off in front of a warm fire...

I think i am about a six!! Having been out of circulation for much of this year i have been somewhat less than adventurous with my moves, must do better 2008
I'm surprised that so many people seem to be dis-satisfied with their own dancing.
Maybe my comment about competition was a bit mis-leading, but I don't feel that I need to compare myself to other dancers. I see things I like and want to copy (or avoid), and often realise I don't have the ability to copy a lot of what I see, but that doesn't mean that I am not comfortable with where my dancing is at the moment.
I view the comparison with others a little bit like comparing times for long distance running - almost everyone is racing against the clock, and not against the other runners in the race. The results you expect to achieve depend on how much effort you put in, and even if the elite runners can do twice the distance in the same time it's still possible to feel that you've met your own targets (or not!)
I think I found the forum at about the first time that I felt my progress didn't match my expectations
Maybe a better question would have been 'rate your progress in dancing out of 10', since we've had the 'where are you on a scale of beginner, intermediate, teacher' - and the upper end of that scale is difficult to define anyway.

Yes, I agree and I really like the distance running comparison. Enthusiastic amateurs don't expect to achieve the same times as Olympic athletes - their scale is personal to their own ability/age/situation. Same with the dancing - the scale I was imagining relates to my own personal dancing situation and goals.
There's no point comparing myself on the same scale as professional dancers who have trained since childhood - that way madness lies!
8-9?? Really? Wow, thanks, that's a huge compliment! I'm blushing now.
Hey, maybe I should change my rating and go for 6 instead?
I'm hoping the programme I'm doing at the gym will help me become a better dancer - a big part of the programme is aimed at strengthening my back and abs, plus stability/balance exercises. It's 1 1/2 hours of sheer hell, but hopefully it'll work!

This is hard. I am in the DJ camp on this one, last night i was chatting to a lady who knew me when i 1st started dancing. I told her that in my opinion my dancing has diminished a lot from when i 1st started as i now only do about 10 moves, i used to know dozens but now stick to the 10 comfort moves.
I have however worked on my connection and if it comes together and i hit the zone i have a great dance and usually a great night.
However is my perception of a great dance the same as everybody elses?
I personally think the longer you dance the less you do.
For me a 4 at a push.

A social partner dance requires no rating. You only have one partner at a time. During the dance he/she is the best partner you've got. Just enjoy the moment.
If you want to score your dancing relative to others you need to compete. You'll get a score - but that's only your score and that day in that company.
Just get out and dance and don't worry about your score.
Interesting thread .........
Are posters to the poll being honest of how they feel, being modest, or just after enhancing their ego
A poll of how others honestly rate them would be more intersting

I can parry a full strength roundhouse kick with less force than I lead Ceroc. There are dance styles where I can take someone who doesn't know it and we can dance together to quite a high standard. Sadly this simply isn't the case for me with Ceroc at the moment, so "0" works for me. Feel free to rate me if you wish (though in my experience this will merely be a reflection of your dancing skill Different dancers will rate me from "Truly Awful" to "Wonderful" and everywhere in between)

It depends so much on the scale, doesn't it? Assuming that five is average ability on an average Modern Jive night, I'll put myself at a six. Noticeably above average, but not stand-out-special.
