    Franco's Weekenders

Part of email received this evening :-

    • We have decided to pull out from the current discussions with third parties in respect of jointly organising future jive weekends at Camber Sands.
    • We will not organise any jive weekends at Camber Sands in 2008 ...../snip/...... we presently have no association with any weekender that may take place at Camber from this point forward and untill further notice.
    • ..../snip/.....we have decided to stage two brand new jive weekends (Riot on the 18th of April and Spree on the 10th October 2008) at an alternative Resort, Lakeside, owned by Warner and based in Hayling Island.

Check out his web site for more details

Looks interesting, accommodation for just 432 bodies, yet the largest of the 5 venues has a floor 3 times the size of Cambers main room!! Even with the fact that you can buy tickets for entry to the weekender without accommodation, it still seems as though there will be plenty of space to dance. It sounds like a bit of competion for the Swish punters, with half board and dinner being served by waiters and a dance floor in the restaurant! The accommodation looks really nice too.

Oooh, all this high-level negotiation - it's all very exciting

Do you reckon they both had teams of expensive lawyers like in cheesy 80's films (Pretty Woman / Wall St etc)? Coz that'd be cool.

I'm almost tempted to go, just so I can say I've been to a weekender with a silly made up name.

Sounds like a good thing for us punters - but the description suggests that there will be wristbands, otherwise how can access to the restaraunt be policed?

Maybe it'll be like a hotel, where you have to give your room number or show your room key?

This weekend looks fabulous. I'm pretty sure I'll be there. Well done Franco

I think the suspicions of board-room coup type activities are well founded. Franco's email hints at broken down negotiations between potential business partners. It also hints at a change in Franco's relationship with the management of Camber.

For what it's worth, I think Franco has done the right thing. When competition hots up at the bottom end of a market place you can choose to compete on either price or quality. I'm pleased that Franco has chosen the quality route

    made up ???? I don't think so

My fave weekender of all time and has been going for about 12 years is Rhythm RIOT - IMHO is a great name and is a popular jive name too

So you think the Ceroc weekender names are more suitable ?

And wasn't one of Franco's already called Jive Spree?

They all have names - even Southport has 'Jiving you Crazy' etc - though it just tend to get referred to as 'Southport' Feb, June etc.

Events have to have some sort of a name - you can't just call it 'Modern Jive Weekender' - to differentiate between organisers and venues.

Dunno. It looked to me like the ceroc idea had been borrowed, which was entertaining. I certainly think of weekenders by location, and then date. Who's organising them is almost not so relevant as who's going.

It's a question of emphasis - Ceroc tend to strongly push the name first, and the venue / date last. To be fair, so do most weekenders - Beach Booogie, for example - Jive Addiction is the exception.

But I think Ceroc seem to have achieved a monopoly in the "Really dumbass names for weekenders" market.

I could not agree more with your comments here Andy.

This all sounds very exciting… a great location and venue. Well done Franco

But in the game of MJ Monopoly what is Mayfair and what is the Old Kent Road?

Me and Gav have been to a Jump, Jive & Boogie thing at Hayling Island and it was great. I haven't been to this venue, but I understand it's a damn sight better than Pontins Camber.

Well even Mayfair isn't exclusive any more, so it's obviously nothing to do with WCS or tango.

I've spoken to the jive dance organiser who uses the 'Riot' name and she's not too happy about Franco's choice of weekender name!

Having spoken to him, she's waiting to see if he'll change it.

Great news for me. I usually miss out on weekenders because I don't like staying away overnight, but this is only an hour's drive, so I can daytrip it. Yay!

I'll be a daytripper too - I just need to check in to Chez Maman's b&b.
