    In the UK, you can start a dance at any point; it doesn't matter if it's on the 1, 5, 8 etc. However I've heard from quite a few people that it's taught differently in Oz and that it's expected that you'd start on the 1. I think it's even mentioned in the Musicailty Dvd by Robert Winter and Nicky Haslam

    You start moving anywhere in the song that grabs your fancy,(or her fancy if she is leading), but if you are aiming to "hit the hits"in the song, then back right/left on one will help with most patterns, There seems to be a major divergence of ideas, even within australia about what true modern jive rules are, rule of thumb, if you enjoy your dancing you are doing it right,
