It shouldn't really matter what people's occupations are, just as long as they can dance, they're sociable etc (like Ducasi said) .
I'm a math geek/ computer programmer who dabbles in electronic engineering.
I wouldn't say I'm a scientist.. unless I can be a MAD scientist?
I'm a rubbish dancer though.. I have a theory though.. I need to memorise 10 moves and I'll number them from 0 to 9 then I'll simply dance my way though Pi or e
right ... move 3.. move 1.. move 4 .. move 1 again ...
at least that way I shouldn't get stuck on the yoyo !!
I think I've read the whole thread (so far), and nobody has dared to give this explanation:
I'm a geek and can't meet people. Maybe if I try partner dancing I'll meet some people of the weird sex*
I have myself noticed a large number of scientific types among those I like to dance with (Alice is the notable exception).
Lawyers, in my experience, do not dance.

*We can't tell you which is the weird sex without blowing your mind.
Maybe there is a higher precentage of folk who have non-creative jobs that need some creative outlet?
erm... that dosn't really appy to some though...
Perhaps there is just a higher percentage of people who simply love music and love to dance.
(Or perhaps they just want to get into close proximity with someone and take on a dominant/submisive part as a role reversal to their normal lives? )
