    How to dodge Christmas obligations

An increase in party nights, but offset by Xmas obligations.

A chance to pool tactics for staying on the dancefloor this Christmas.

    Tactic 1

    Deflecting unwanted houseguests.

Type "Bah Humbug" and press send.

Shout "Bah Humbug" and hang up.

Write "Bah Humbug" and post letter.

Growl "Bah Humbug" and run away.

    You're welcome.

Re: How to dodge Christmas obligations

Normally I'm not a fan of lots of fuss in the run up to Christmas. I like the day itself, going to church, time focused on family - but get fed up with the hype.

For some reason this year I am looking forward to it. Not to lots of parties - yawn - boring - unless dancing is involved of course! But to carol singing, hot drinks round a fire, decorating the tree, shopping with the twinkly lights in the street - shopping not being a mad rush but time thinking about those I love and what gifts they would like, having lovely meals, being with special people.

And being off work for over a week cos we aren't opening on Christmas Eve - will be the longest I have been off work in 6 years (and that was to work as a volunteer so doesn't really count). Already making the list of things I want to get done round the house!

Pagan won't get you out of much except for the church bit (which is the most important bit for me!). You'd still have to do the Christmas tree, dinner etc - all pagan orgins.

Indeed - which is what I do! So really, I shouldn't be sending out cards with 'Merry Christmas' on them, but 'Happy Solstice' or 'It's cold and dark - let's have a party to warm up!' or something like that instead.

I'm going to Norway this Christmas, for the first time since 2004. A bit miffed as I'm NOT invited to spend Christmas with my brother and his family, as that's the main reason I'm actually putting my poor dog in kennels and going to Norway! But when he told me I wasn't invited this year (in-laws invited instead....), and I said I'd just have Christmas on my own in Dundee instead, he got in a huff! Go figure....

So, I'm having Christmas Eve (which is what we celebrate in Norway and most of Europe....) with my mum and step-dad, then Christmas Day brunch with my brother etc. I have threatened them with not giving them their pressies until Christmas Day since that's when I'll see them. Again my brother was in a huff. Tough!

I'm going to miss my dog!

    I have a simple program:
    1. Move to the other side of the world.
    It's remarkably effective.

If you can't dodge the obligations and they're a horrible trial, I would recommend playing 'Dysfunctional Family Bingo'.

In advance, you write on a card all the annoying / unpleasant things that you know will happen (because they happen every bloody year!)

e.g. your mother will nag you about why you are single / childless / jobless / have a bad haircut / are wearing THAT outfit etc.

your brother will get drunk / stoned / high and will cause a fight.

Uncle Letch will try to kiss everyone under the mistletoe and squeeze eveyone's bum etc.

As these things happen, instead of getting involved / annoyed / upset, you mark them off on your Bingo card. When you have a Full House, tell yourself you've won the game and award yourself a prize.

    Tactic 2

Send Christmas Greetings via email - design your own.

I abhor doing the Chrismas cards.

Last year the postie was emptying out the post box of the final collection, while I was desperately sticking stamps on my pile of cards.

But what to do about the luddites who have no email?

Hand delivery would mean a 250 mile trip to North Yorkshire.

Re: How to dodge Christmas obligations

All the utility companies and BT, etc are moving away from paper billing so we'd just be following the trend with e-cards.

Actually, BT - the cheeky bastards - made me jump through hoops to keep my paper billing - pretending they'd had a technical error after I first indicated my willingness to keep paper bills and wording the forms such that it can be quite misleading and very easy to misunderstand what you need to do to retain paper bills. I am sure within the year they will introduce an admin charge for those wishing to retain paper billing but until then I will keep asking for it out of spite as much as anything.
