especially with all the headliner teachers being WCS!

it has diminished compared to last year as i think most MJ dancers
have struggled converting to WCS myself included!

i would dearly to be able to do it - and with more practice maybe!

i do go on MJ weekenders primarily for MJ dancing - but who can could resist the Blues room @ southport (R.I.P) - i defy anyone to give a monkeys what style they were dancing there @ 2am!

I think that no small part of the decision to use these teachers is related to the distance travelled adding to their perceived attractiveness. The perception is that they must be so much better than the local talent because you had to go so far to get a great teacher - we all know you can't be famous in your home town

I was reminded of this reacenly when teaching for Jive Addiction in La Palma. I look up to Nelson and Karen as great teachers. I was chatting to a dancer during the freestyle and asking who was her regular teacher. She said Nelson and I told her I thought she was lucky to have such a great teacher - she said that she thought I was better

I did see her sober the next day and she said "have we met?"

    oh dear!

we do need inspirational teachers - but at the end of the day we are dancers and we are there to improve our own quality of dancing.

Yes, JA has made a clear move towards WCS (and I guess, away from MJ).

I'm not even sure if JA could be classed as a MJ organisation now.

I do agree with that - although they don't actively say that

    the say

"Jive Addiction organise the NO.1 DANCE WEEKENDERS in the UK - and we're in no doubt that ECLIPSE at Butlins will be the 'NUMBER ONE choice for dancers!"

i do enjoy a bit of WCS - just not all the time - and after a while it all looks the same

I think this is absolutely true for some dancers - although I'd say most male dancers are looking for a quantitative improvement as they add more moves with no qualitative change.

Re: Is there too much West Coast Swing at Modern Jive Weekenders?

I've never been able to tell the difference between WCS and MJ music. I remember that Wes put something on for the WCS lot at Rollerworld once and I couldn't tell the difference from what I Ceroc to.

But this is what happens anyway with weekenders and dance nights. Its just a kind of 'Music Evolution' I suppose!

25 years ago I was a Rock and Roll DJ, but the type of music I used to play bears no relation to what you get today at a Rock and Roll night. In fact sometimes you cringe when you hear it, even though it's from the same era. But it's still Rock N Roll to the average 'man in the street'

I suppose this is just whats going to happen with MJ. A few years ago it was just CEROC wherever you went (or LEROC, etc. depending on where you live) then it graduated into Modern Jive (Yes I know thats what it IS!) but now there is a definate distinction between MJ and WCS to those 'in the know' but an outsider couldn't tell the difference.
Like I've said before on here West Coast Swing means something entirely different to me, but I bet not many people out there have danced to it.

It could be said is there too much Latin American at Modern Jive weekenders, or too much chart stuff even. Why is there an overdose of 'Blues' at MJ weekenders? and They say theres too much 'Boing Boing' - The answer is simple because people want it and some don't.
The fact is Music will always re-invent itself with a new name but at the end of the day whatever the current trend is - thats the music you're going to get. Peoples taste changes and the DJ's will try to cater for it.

No doubt WCS will be replaced in a year or so and someone will be asking on here (which incidently we all joined because it is CEROC forum!)
'Is there too much ................... at WCS weekenders

Argentine tango seems to be the new WCS, not that I am complaining. it's just an observation that's all.

Yes, there do seem to be a few more people interested in it now, for some reason, than (say) a year ago.

I think these things come in cycles though.

Andy you may be a great teacher but you fail miserably at humility.

Andy, Andy....sometimes you should take comfort in your thoughts.

Once spoken or written all chances of humility vanish...

Now you should take comfort in your ego.

One thing I've learnt is that the meek will not inherit until the "last day/seventh trumpet" - and who would want to join them when it's probably going to be 144,000 people carrying leaflets?

Besides, I'm being completely honest and not the least bit humble when I say that teaching MJ is really easy because it's an easy dance. However, MJ being an easy dance than anyone could teach means that it's even harder to detect the mark of greatness. Great teaching is all about motivating people to want to learn and getting the message across - in my case what makes me a great teacher is that I'm incredibly good looking, charming, tall, slim, muscular and a fabulous kisser wearing sexy underwear*

I don't think Christine wears any - then again, perhaps she gets other people to wear it for her

Actually, if truth be known, he had a bit of both of ours on (and it still didn't cover anything )

News announced tonight suggests we might have a dedicated, accommodated WCS weekender near Heathrow, London in November

No more details were mentioned except for the fact that its the second to last weekend in November (I think) and that its called "The London Swingvitational"

Wow, that would be so cool! I really hope it all goes through ok.

Yeah it does sound amazing, It will make a change not to have to travel to far for a weekender for London folk....I`m told that there will be 12 American All stars hired for the event, The emphasis being on US pro`s with reputations for being prolific social dancers, as well as being accomplished teachers....details to follow

I know I may be in a minority but I actually value a lot of the other All-Star dancers just as much as the usual pro's on the circuit. A lot of the time it is simply just a case of these dancers not wanting, or being able to, give up their time to go pro. It is certainly not an indication of any lack of skill etc. They will all have invaluable information to give.

To have 6 couples coming over is nothing short of amazing!

    Woohoo! Can't wait.

I will keep my fingers crossed that we will be able to dance until the wee small hours. I miss that from my trips to the states.
