    Is Autumn the weekender season?

From modernjive.com, here's the UK weekenders throughout 2007:

Now, to me, it definitely looks like the schedule is heavy in the autumn months. Out of the 28 (!) weekenders in 2007, 13 of them are in September - November.

So why are the autumn months so crowded?

What strikes me is that ten of these are Ceroc weekenders.

What also strikes me is that there's room for another operator

I should imagine it is because the holiday camps and hotels have a "high" season when they are in demand from people who have no choice but go on holiday when their children are out of school. Outside of those times there is less demand and so they need to offer themselves at a lower price to groups of people (like dancers) who are not tied to school holidays as much.

With Ceroc ramping up the number of weekenders they do, maybe next spring will be just as loaded?

But although there are more weekenders in those months, some of them clash, so there are still 3 weekends in each of the months Feb, March, April, Sept, Oct and November, that are taken with weekenders. As Chef pointed out, the summer months will have limited availability at the venues, because of family holidays.

What I notice is that 4 of those are in a 6 week period from end Sep to first weekend in Nov. In that period there are only 2 weekends when there isn't a Ceroc weekend on.

And most people can't go to all, so I guess it just means more choice.

Blimey - so many to choose from. Wish I had the time and the money to do more (mutter, moan ).... hoping to manage 3 next year.....that sounds rather feeble doesn't it.....(crawls back under stone ).

Giving more weight to the bigger/full weekenders, I think of it as 2 distinct weekender seasons.

    SPRING(ISH) SEASON
The first runs from the end of January with the January Jivetime weekender, followed closely by Southport February and ends with Southport June at end of May / Start of June.

Total Duration: Just over 4 months.

    AUTUMN SEASON
The second runs from Southport September to Jivetime November.

Total Duration: Just under 2 months.

Each season seems to have a similar number of weekenders, but being shorter the second season is more intense.

Taken together the two weekender seasons cover almost exactly 6 months of the year, so half the year is in a weekender season.

It's not - although lots of people do travel to it and stay with friends/in hotels.

Minnie, don't suppose you fancy creating a list for 2008 for your site?

If a Weekender is termed as residential then surely that rules out splash as it wasn't.

Also the blackpool competition isn't residential.

Just being a stickler for details!

By residential you mean accomodation arranged by the event organiser? For me its residential if I stay away from home somewhere near where the workshops and freestyles are for the purpose of dancing - whether that is 'on site' (Southport, Camber), included when I book (Scarborough) or arranged by myself (Splash).

I think if we use the term 'weekender to mean an event that runs from Fri night til Sun night with workshops on Sat and Sun and three evenings of freestyles as a cohesive 'event'.

I wouldn't consider the Blackpool competition (or any of the others) a 'weekender' as there aren't workshops or Sun evening dancing (is there anything run by the organisers on the Sun?).

Re: Is Autumn the weekender season?

So what about the WCS weekend in Weston Supermare? Does that count as a dance weekend or not? I suppose some may say it's not, as you've got to arrange your own accomodation? It's a borderline case like the Blackpool comps and the Beach Ballroom....

But it still counts as a dance weekender for me, because I'm away dancing and doing workshops the whole weekend, and sharing accomodation with lots of other crazy dancers!

Which reminds me I haven't booked yet..... Thought I was organised, having booked Dance Fever and the next two Southport weekenders already, but have forgotten about Weston! Am intending to do slightly fewer weekenders next year, as I've gone a bit OTT this year, with 9 in total (3 Southports, WCS at Weston Supermare, Storm, 2 times Blaze, Boogie by the Bay and Dance Fever...).

Oh, and of course there's the Focus weekends with Franck. They should count as dance weekenders, surely? Residential dance weekend with workshops and parties, just on a very much smaller scale? Or does it have to be a huge weekender with multiple rooms and dozens of teachers and DJs to count? Actually, that might bring my total up to 10....... Or was that last year I went to a Kirriemuir weekend?? Oh, I get confused!

DJ Why have you added 24 Plus to
JiveTime Next Generation Jive Weekend - 24Plus, 9-12 November 2007

it reads as only 24 over

or do you mean this is Franco 24th event?

    I dunno. As I said, that's cut-and-pasted from modernjive.com.
