Fair point - I certainly shouldn't have said "any bad habit".
In this particular case, I think the standard progression is:
(1) Lead by brute force.
(2) Realise this is a bad idea, try to cut down the force using less fingers.
(3) Realise the problem isn't how many fingers you use, but how much force you apply, and you have more control using more contact area.
In which case if you're going to pass through stage (2) at all, you might as well start it sooner rather than later. In my experience it's pretty easy to move from (2) to (3), even if you've been doing (2) for years and years.
To me fingertip-leading is a useful learning exercise, it's not really something I like doing in social dancing.
I still use fingertip-leading when practising, it's a good technique. Although no-hand leading is a better practise technique - and again that's not something I'd use outside of practicas.
So it's useful at all times, basically. But yes, introducing it as a technique early on can't hurt.
I use as many fingers as necessary. I've found that one finger can be enough to move a girl, but sometimes you just have to use more.
