    What are the top five things you look for in a venue?

    For me:

    Fifth: Distance. Not so important for me. I have travelling 70 miles to get to the futher venue I have been and regular travel 30 or so mile (both ways) each night. But I venue has to be worth the petrol money to get there.

    Fourth: The general standard of dancers. Not as important for me as I don't mind dancers which beginners (except on very slow or very fast tracks).

    Third: The music. I hate it when the DJ just sets up tracks then wanders on the dancefloor for quarter of an hour. By doing this you usually get the same tracks in the same order every week and it is so annoying, especially if you don't particulary like that set of music.

    Second: The floor. I like fast floors. What I don't like are dusty floor that wouldn't look out of place as decking in the yard. It shouldn't take effort for me to spin. However not too fast as I do know one venue which is pretty lethal.

    First & Top Issue: Not having to park my car in a random sidestreet. Yesterday I had the option to get in at a venue for free but simply chose not to go as I hate not being able to park in specific venue car parking. I worry too much and it just distracts me all night.

    Pretty much agree with most of your list, except your top issue which doesn't bother me at all.

    I'd add instead that the place has to be well-ventilated and/or have a good "chill" space with seats. I hate hot venues where there's no-where to cool down and relax.

    Not in any particular order - this is freestyle of course not lessons nights;

    1. Friends - socialising is a big part of my night
    2. Good dancers - important to me, cant stand doing bouncers with no musicality.
    3. Fans - will not tolerate a hot hall that is not catering for the heat
    4. Music - self explanitory really
    5. Good atmosphere - like a buzz, hate cliques and lots of smiles, hello's and nice to meet you's.

    Not much to ask is it.....Mind you going to Cheshunt tonight.

    I don't think the music or standard of dancers are necessarily something that should be associated with a venue. With an event maybe but not necessarily a venue.

    In a venue I look for

    * good climate control (however this is achieved)
    * clean, well-maintained toilets
    * non-sticky, decent-sized floor
    * bar with reasonable prices
    * seating that makes those people sitting down approachable

    It is where I go. Mostly the same dancers (not always a bad thing though), repeatitive music (yawn). I think they play an important part of how you feel of the venue.

    I think you and I have different definitions of 'venue' - I consider this to be the physical characteristics of the building in which an event is held - I think you consider it to be the event being held. Makes a difference to the answer I would give.

    I'm with RobD on this 'venue' is the about........the venue. All the other stuff (dancers, music....) they are no-brainers and are discussed ad infinitum elsewhere.

    For venue it is:

    1. Cubic capacity of the dance floor(s)
    2. Number and size of fans (if not air-conditioned)
    3. Bar (eg. which serves reasonably priced orange squash)
    4. Toilets: number/quality/changing space
    5. 'Feng shui' aspects (eg. how the doors/entrances are - and so how they energy flows around.

    Of course, 'venue' (in terms of physical characteristics) as a factor is probably only 5% of my decision of where to go. Eg. Say it is Tuesday and I have choice of: Watford, Finchley, Shenley or Luton. Which do I go for? Well primarily, music, dancers and my previous enjoyment there are what determines it. I don't think: "well Shenley has got a fantastic loo, which is really clean, so I must go dancing there tonite...."

    As long as the doors are open when I'm trying to get in, I don't really mind how they are

    I would take "venue" to mean the whole shebang.

    Would Steven666 quantify whether or not he just means the bulding itself, or is he too busy with Beezlebub.

    In particular order -

    1. Floor must be perfect for dancing upon - no sticky patches

    2. Dj must play what I like, and tune in the tracks.

    3. Ventilation please - we are not cattle.

    4.

    I meant the whole night. To me the venue doesn't just mean the venue.

    I know I sound craaaaaazy!

    Yeah, I was right!

    Can I just add that not only has to DJ to tune in each track, but to be able to - so

    4. hi spec sound system - I hate fuzzy.

    5. plenty of volume so I don't have to dance near the stage.

    Actually all my 5 things should really count as done, they are pretty basic, hey you are hosting a dance? not a jumble sale?

    In reality - possibly only 10 per cent hit rate.

    Re: What are the top five things you look for in a venue?

    For me it would go somewhere in the order:

    1. The Music - I don't care how amazing a dance venue is, without good music it is a wasted night. Great tunes played through a good sound system is the target. People really under value DJs at times. The DJ can make or break a night. They have fragile egos, and are open to a barrage of criticism if folk don't think they get it right. Maybe we should all take the time to appreciate them and let them know when they do play a great set

    2. Ventilation - OK, you have a superstar DJ. But I have to continually take time out to cool down and change shirts because of the heat. This is really frustrating if the DJ is playing excellent music This happened at Breeze. The blues room was just so hot, but so were the DJs! On Friday and Saturday I went through 25 shirts The temperature was better on the Sunday night, but I think that was possibly because a few people had started to drift home and there were less bodies in the room.

    3. The Dancers - Dancing is such a wonderful thing to do in a cool venue with good music. But dancing with friends makes it so much more enjoyable. The ability of the dancers isn't so much an issue; but I would be lying if I said that it didn't factor at all Ability covers leads and follows. It's nice to have dancers to lead who are proficient, but it is equally important that the leads have at least a small grasp of floor craft.

    4. The Floor - I do like a fast floor, but that's not a prerequisite. I hate over crowded floors with no room to dance. Floor size isn't so much an issue as space... if you see what I mean.

    5. The Facilities - Nice lighting, clean loos, ample parking, reasonable bar prices (not £2:60 for a pint of soda water!!), somewhere to sit, friendly staff.... etc

    OK, I kind of cheated with point five, but it does kind of come under the banner of general comfort. The overwhelming point for me though is the music. With the right music the rest can be worked around with shirt changes, talc, corner dancing, drinking tap water and so on. But bad music = bad night full stop

    Re: What are the top five things you look for in a venue?

    1. Good dance floor (spacious, smooth, non-sticky)
    2. Good, varied music (if it's the same stuff week after week, I ain't going!)
    3. Ventilation or places to go and cool down
    4. Good dancers (No, I don't enjoy only dancing with beginners. Call me a hotshot, go on.)
    5. Free water!

    I pretty much agree with Stokies excellent post above. The only thing I would add (and this may be just me) is the shape of the room. I much prefer a more or less square room to one that is long and thin.

    That I agree with. Either that or it's the temperature/weather generally. This Saturday was the first time in a while where I felt it wasn't necessary to change yet still put in the effort if not more. But it counter balanced by having to get up twice at night to nip to the loo. Blimey, I'm only 26.
