    Merciless to Ming

So Emperor Ming Campbell's been shown the door: who should replace him?

And with "Flash" Gordon wobbling, and Dave "Prince Barin" Cameron still pretending to hug trees, what does the future hold?

And would more people vote if the next election was like an RKO serial, or had a soundtrack by Queen?

    * from a Scottish POV, been trying to work out a way to fit Alex Salmond and Wendy Alexander into this metaphor, but it just doesn't stretch that far...

Someone with a name actual people can pronounce would be pleasant. So that rules out Lembit for a start.

But I'd put money on it being a non-Scot, after two in a row. Someone young and English is my bet.

Although, is Kennedy recovered yet? A guaranteed-sober Kennedy would be the best option.

"saviour of the universe" : perhaps Private Eye should have gone down the "Flash Gordon" route, rather than the whole Stalin, 5 year plan, tractors to the gulag thing... I'd find it funnier

It never fails to amuse me that he dumped a TV weathergirl for a Cheeky Girl

Someone wrote to the "Metro" when she was made leader and suggested Wendy looked a bit like Cameron Diaz, i almost replied "yes, if repeatedly hit by a large stick, then perhaps there is a slight similarity" but apathy took me before i could reach work...

I'm sure Michael Palin will be shown visiting a spa town called Lembit Opik at some point in his new series.

Probably. Though finding a suitable candidate among the Lib Dems who's not had a trouser malfunction in the past few years could be tough...

Indeed, and I've heard a lot of talk that the sensible thing for the Lib Dems to have done was have Ming as caretaker for a while, and let Charlie sort himself out. The fact that this didn't happen kind of shoots down all this "Ming Campbell's a nice guy" guff - if he was a nice guy, he'd have stated this from the outset. He was the Deputy leader, after all.

On R4 at lunchtime they said that, as well as an 'I'm backing Chris Hulne for leader' site on Facebook and an 'I'm backing Nick Clegg' site, there is a 'Nick Clegg is more of a hotty than David Cameron any day' site.

Me, I reckon they should appoint Lembit's girlfriend. They'd get far more votes.

In the closing scene of Flash Gordon, a ring remains from which Ming appears to be reborn. Something similar also seemed to happen with the Master in Dr. Who.

This was from Simon Heffer in the Daily Torygraph today:

Some people of 66 look barely middle-aged, others look as though they sleep in a coffin. Sir Ming is in the second category.

Although I laughed at this - isn't that a bit unfair?

PS Lembit Opik has got a strange shaped mouth. Beware - he who talks out of side of mouth speak with forked tongue. (Or did he just spend too much time kissing the woman with the biggest mouth on TV - that weather girl - forgotten her name now).

But who'd want to finger Ming's Ring?

    It is a bit.

Churchill wouldn't have got to be PM today, he'd be laughed at as an obese, bald, manic-depressive alcoholic - and worst of all, old.

Which he was, of course. But no-one cared that much then.

I've said it before, Lembit's my idol - a boring and unimpressive person, but still manages to get the girls.

    Re: Merciless to Ming

    From this BBC article:

    Mr Cable, 64, ...

    Ms Kramer, 57,...

    Mr Davey, 41,...

    Mr Clegg, 40, ...

    ....

In a BBC interview on Tuesday, Sir Menzies said he had resigned because the media's obsession with his age
    No kidding
