What am I. your English teacher?
I see little evidence that the offer of discounts affects dancer's behavior. People are pleased to accept the discount, but I don't think their actions were motivated by the offer of one.
On the subject of bringing new men, it's a double edged sword for the ladies. They get new men to dance with and sit out more. But the quality of that dancing drops as they have to dance with more beginners.
I think the only answer is for me to ignore the tuts, raised eyebrows, etc. Or I could use the Tazer to cull the ladies I don't like dancing with. That'd even up the M/F ratio and produce a nice collection of shoes and handbags
Don't Ceroc / MJ organisers have guest lists already though? Certainly, there are a few people who can't seem to avoid mentioning how they get into everything free...
So this'd just be an extension of the concept - basically, pick a dozen regular men, fnar fnar, then give them free passes for a few months and see what happens.
Inspired by these quotes, I have come up with a foolproof idea.
Say you have 20 spare ladies on average. Set up 10 ironing boards at one side of the room. The first 10 new men who turn up can bring their ironing, and the spare ladies do it whilst they are waiting.
You get more men, and they will look smart if they come back next week. And the ladies that are still standing out have something to do. There is no downside that I can see...
That man is a genius. Fact
At many dance events there's a gender numerical imbalance and a gender quality imbalance and they are not always the same. I hear the phrase 'not enough good men' from people criticising an event than the phrase 'not enough men'. Not saying it's right or wrong - we all go dancing for our own reasons - but there's no short term fix for it.
Oh, I like that, seems like a good promotion though maybe a few of them would just sit around and socialize rather than do the class. Clubs tend to do a "free before midnight" thing to try and promote people to arrive earlier (but that's as much about making that back with increased drinks sales).
That's because the bouncers will break their noses if they do .
Maybe a little different in London (though I'm not sure how much) but I guess if we were turned down for entry into a night club we could head 30 meters up the road to the next one. Whereas if we get turned down on the door at an MJ night then it's not like we can go to the one up the road.
I've done something like this. I haven't picked regular men as they were coming anyway. I've given free passes to good dancers who don't usually come as a way of encouraging them to come. They brought good women with them so they didn't have to dance with beginners and it made no difference to the gender balance. Besides, only a few of the good men actually took up the offer
Nowadays we give free passes to other organisers, demonstrators and other crew. On an ad-hoc basis I give free passes to ladies who we press-gang into leading during the beginners lesson if there's loads of ladies over.
One suggestion I had made to me was that we put leaflets in Men's Barbers. I think I'll give it a go - everybody needs haircuts. Especially CJ where it's long overdue
