I reply with "on a dance floor mostly, though I have been known to dance in a shop or two..."
But since I'm regularly teaching now, I usually say "Doncaster and Sheffield, but you can also find me in random places across the country!"
I'm finding it more and more difficult to answer this one, mainly because I've not danced at a regular place for ages, I just flit around...
What do other "floating dancers" say?

Depends why they're asking really...
I tend to just mention a few places I occasionally go to and say I don't go very regularly
Does this happen to others?
I say I like to go somewhere, then I never seem to go there due to unforseen circumstances.
Also I say, "Oh I hardly ever go there", then I do.
Weird
oooo I like that one!! may just have to steal it
My general response is "all over the country side" - as I really don't have a regular venue for example last month danced in Edinburgh, Reading, London, Bedford & Bristol ..... and based on the number of times I danced in the various places - Edinburgh was my regular area that month?!?!
Anywhere with a good beat
Yeah, it is a little weird, isn't it? I get asked that quite regularly though - doesn't everyone? - and so I wanted a simple non-smart-arse-y answer I could give that didn't involve going into my current dance habits, which are somewhat complex and difficult to describe.
I think Ghost's is the best suggestion so far.
I'm getting a very similar question whenever I tell people I'm learning tango - I always get asked "Where do you learn?" - usually followed by "Oooh, it looks lovely, I'd love to do classes..." (at that point I usually tell them it's extremely difficult, that puts most of them off )
Basically, I guess I should just avoid the whole conversation thing.
You want to try answering it, as I did for about a year or so 'well actually just at weekenders like this really'. At least now I can say 'NI'.
And I always ask it of visting dancers to NI and its funny how knowing the 'styles' of some areas/venues I can sometimes hazard a guess!
Inside
It varies! I find it a very hard question to answer as I haven't danced regularly anywhere for ages...
I had a good one the other week, though. What you have to remember is that I'm so out of practice & not particularly confident with my dancing. This happened after a dance with a teacher...
Ceroc Teacher: Haven't seen you around before. Where do you usually dance?
Me: Well, on & off. I suppose Shenley mostly.
Ceroc Teacher: Well stop going there & come here instead!
Now that's a perfect way to increase your students' morale & confidence!
Don't think I didn't notice....
I normally get asked "where's your normal venue?" to which I really want to reply, "I haven't found one yet, they're all weird" , but politeness takes over (and the fact that I might want another dance later ).
Post-Bliss comment...
Now I realise that this can be taken as a compliment when asked by a partner that realy likes dancing with you. I had the same question preceded by "It would be lovely to dance together more often... Where do you usually dance?" My reply - "Norfolk" produced a very disappointed "Oh..." How's that for a compliment?
Sometimes that's the way I see it too. People are just interested in where that dancer is from because they like dancing with them and are wondering if they can repeat the experience. It's often why I ask it.
At other times it's much the same small talk as "the weather is nice" .
