    Because SMS messages are limited in how many characters you can send per text - by sending abbreviated words you can fit more information in for your 25p or whatever each one costs.

    1. I think Amy Winehouse' Back to black is the dog's.

    2. I would prefer that no women anywhere were a) as thin and b) as tattooed as her and that nobody was as c) troubled as her but that has nothing to do with her music - haven't any of you heard of Billy Holiday?

    3. I've heard of Minnie Caldwell but not Minnie Cladwell.
